I haven't played The Colonel's Bequest, but it has a very good reputation. I haven't played the Phantasmagoria games either, because I simply don't like horror as a genre, but the first one has a good reputation - and the second one, from what I've heard, is very silly.
Just wondering... are they worth playing, even though I don't like horror?
The first Phantasmagoria, I wouldn't even say is a "horror" game... Unless you think Gabriel Knight 1, 2 or 3 are also of the horror genre?
The first Phantasmagoria starts with a couple moving into a house, and the main character (the wife) going through the house and finding out things. Something happens to the husband, that does cause one ... suggested, very, dark, scene... but really, it's all about exploring a haunted house, and uncovering its secrets... and dealing with your significant other who eventually goes "dark side"...
The second Phantasmagoria game, is your typical "movie sequel." It tries to take everything that was great about the first game, and kick it up ten notches, and ruins the subtly that made the first game so good; story wise, it has absolutely nothing to do with the first one, also.
