Spelling and Grammar on the Internet
I was over at Newgrounds playing some Flash games earlier today when I came upon a game entitled "Knite Dude." Yes, that's right, he spelled "knight" as "knite." At first I thought this was on purpose (sometimes words are changed for a specific reason), but I quickly realized that wasn't the case.
I made a screen shot of "Knite Dude's" instructions screen to show everyone. I'm not sure whether I should laugh or cry.
Some people might attempt to excuse this moron by saying, "Maybe English isn't his first language." It might not be, but I've met many individuals whose native tongue wasn't English (some of you are on this board) and write it just fine.
My only conclusion is that this individual is an idiot. Even worse, he's a lazy idiot. How long does it take to check your spelling? Even if you didn't want to use MS Word (or any other program that can spell check), all you'd need to do is type the word into Google!

Re: Spelling and Grammar on the Internet
I totally agree. Another thing that annoys me....when people use the words lose and loose interchangably. They have 2 different meanings people!!!
Re: Spelling and Grammar on the Internet
A spell checker would have only partially helped. It would not have caught "your killed" nor the grammatical mistakes. All of that aside, you are right. There is no excuse, as there are spell checkers built into so many applications.DeadPoolX wrote:How long does it take to check your spelling? Yeah Deadpool... I feel your pain... Especially for me as a non-native speaker it's frustrating when people make mistakes like that because I often spend some time thinking "Hmmm, what could that mean?" before I realize they made a spelling error.
Especially with there/their/they're and its/it's I feel it's annoying as our school programme for English was designed to stamp out those errors by repeating those vexatious fill-in-the-blank exercises ad nauseam.

I admit. It's frustrating. I see it when I play WORLD OF WARCRAFT - and a lot of people spell things incorrectly on purpose... or they shorten EVERY single word... like sending messages that say "r u up 4 a grp 2 get lewt in the dngn."
*shrug*
At least with the guy you pointed out - spelling and grammar may not be his thing - but he can design a game in flash or whatever - and that's more than I have ever been able to do with Flash.
So... I can't harp too much, personally. He's not smart in one area, but he clearly exceeds my knowledge in another area.

Wow. That's pretty bad. GAH. I can't look.
I don't think it's so much a matter of intelligence as not caring/knowing. I'm sure if he wanted to bother he could write it correctly. Just like I'm sure you could learn Flash, if you wanted, Tawm.

Re: Spelling and Grammar on the Internet
I dunno - there's some limits to the brain. I honestly think mine is full. I have self taught myself a lot of things in life (guitar, html, computers, drawing, etc) - and there are just some things my brain can not wrap itself around. Flash was one of them.
And just to be clear I am not defending the chap - just saying his lack of spelling/grammar does frustrate me (just like all those people on World of Warcraft) - just saying I can at least admire that he (she/they?) can do something I can't.

It's really about practice. Just about anyone can learn to do something. It just takes time. It's true that some people have a "natural" affinity for some things, but without practice, their ability will never truly develop.

Re: Spelling and Grammar on the Internet
The only reason I'd argue this... I have tried to draw most of my life. Because I do so much writing - drawing seemed to be an excellent way to visualize it even further. I kid you not, I have probably be drawing (but I call it doodling, so I don't insult talented people like Jules) for like 15+ years. Not. Even. A. Joke. Comic books first got me into it - and for the life of me... I simply can not draw past my limit that I reached (which isn't even very good)! And this is with Art classes in both High School and College. My artistic talent reached it's peak and will not surpass where it's at!DeadPoolX wrote:It's really about practice. (I honestly think my brain can not digest any more info... it's like, "Dude, it's full up here. There's not a lot of room up in here in the first place - stop trying to cram crap up here! This is a studio apartment, not some mansion!")

Well you know Tawmis, that may be in the eye of the beholder. I myself always did extremely bad at drawing in school. And my handwriting was the worst.
It's been years now. But I'm still drawing, unlike many of my friends and former classmates. They would've been better at it if they just kept up. And now, well, I could not make a living off my sketches, but I had a lot of positive remarks on them, which feels great. But to me they've always seemed very uncontrolled and childish.

Re: Spelling and Grammar on the Internet
Personally, I have seen so many examples of bad spelling on the internet, that "Knite Dude" really doesn't surprise me that much. At least he didn't spell it "Knite Dood". Thank god for small mercies.
