GK: The Best/Worse Part Of This Game Was...
The Best/Worse Part Of This Game Was...
Well - the idea here is - every game (or series, where there was more than one) had some GREAT moments, but there were some, no matter how great the rest of the game was - that had some stinkers. (For example, GK3 over all was an amazing game; but ask anyone about the mustache puzzle of the game, and they will probably all groan).
So I want to see what everyone's Best/Worse moments were for a game... and if there's a series - name Best and Worse for each one, if you're so inclined.

I knew it was a given that someone would mention the mustache in GK3.Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 8:22 pm GK3... Worst part: the cat moustache. Gabriel's scream as he dies.

I agree, I do! I think I only played GK3 twice. I think because it's one of the longer games and not one that I can easily breeze through.

Re: GK: The Best/Worse Part Of This Game Was...
(Standard disclaimer about not liking deaths and dead ends, though the GK games are already pretty good at avoiding those).
GK1
I especially like: The theme music. Also, Gabe's voice. And the way the different characters bring their own perspectives about voodoo. I actually just really like the game.
I dislike: The zombies in the wheel within a wheel.
GK2
I especially like: The German setting. The opera at the end.
I dislike: The conversations are awkward with the whole "getting back into the neutral position at the end". Gabe lost his voice and trench coat. Also, the protagonists are just jerks for no reason. Also, it's too easy to miss things in Neuschwanstein and be unable to progress until you find them.
GK3
I especially like: The Serpent Rouge puzzle. Actually, the computer in general is a nice touch, as is being able to do some actual detectiving (e.g. getting fingerprints).
I dislike: The early 3D graphics really are distractingly blocky, and the low-resolution textures sometimes make vital clues hard to spot. The way time works makes it far too easy to just miss out on content. And the story just isn't as resonant as the others; vampires and a sunny French countryside aren't a great combination. Also, the whole temple section at the end is just completely video games; there's no feeling of that being an actual thing that could exist. Also, cat hair moustache.

Re: GK: The Best/Worse Part Of This Game Was...
The cast really does lend so much life to the game... and I agree, the GK theme is pretty amazing!
Knew the cat hair mustache thing would come up several times... Question (I do agree about the blocky graphics, but they were all like that when it came to 3D) - what do you think if GK3 had been done in SCI? Or do you think you would have preferred FMV similar to GK2? While it's tough to fill Tim Curry's shoes when he voice Gabe, I do think that Dean Erickson did a great job capturing the feel of Gabriel.adeyke wrote: ↑Thu Jun 07, 2018 6:16 pm GK3

It's hard to conceptualize GK3 as 2D game, since the strengths and limitations of the engine inform the design of the game. Do I think that taking GK3 and faithfully recreating it as a more traditional 2D adventure game would vastly improve it? Probably not. Do I think that, if they'd never made the jump to 3D and just created GK3 from the ground up as 2D game, it would have been better? Maybe, but it wouldn't then be the same game as our GK3.

Re: GK: The Best/Worse Part Of This Game Was...
While this is true, you could look at the previous games - because each one changed. GK1 was the simple graphics (when I say simple, I mean compared to games these days), then GK2 was FMV, and then GK3 was 3D models. So since each one changed, you can sort of base your assumptions on was the change from GK1 to GK2 for the better? Was the jump from GK2 to GK3 better? You sort of have a basis on which you might be able to base the idea of what the game might have looked like, based on each version - all hypothetically of course. But I am not asking, "Do you think GK_X would have looked better using the Unreal Engine?"adeyke wrote: ↑Thu Jun 07, 2018 10:10 pm It's hard to conceptualize GK3 as 2D game, since the strengths and limitations of the engine inform the design of the game. Re: GK: The Best/Worse Part Of This Game Was...
Sins of the Father
Best: Learning about voodoo and New Orleans is pretty awesome! More of that, please.
Worst: Spending the first four days sexually harassing every woman you meet.
The Beast Within
Best: When it made me hungry for weisswurst, and I discovered a German Christmas Market in the city while looking for some. And now, because of GK2, I go every year to enjoy weisswurst and a pretzel.
Worst: Grace's jealous beef with Gerde at the beginning.
Blood of the Sacred
Best: Le Serpent Rouge is a pretty amazing puzzle.
Worst: Using hemorrhoid cream to reduce the swelling on a wooden window frame is objectively worse than a cat hair mustache.

Re: GK: The Best/Worse Part Of This Game Was...
SO true about the best part - it is literally what created my interested in New Orleans (and Voodoo) and led to me going to New Orleans once a year for like the next 6 years.
As for the worse - you really think it was sexually harassing? Rather than Gabe flirting?
But then, these days - "sexually harassing"... could be just saying hello.

Re: GK: The Best/Worse Part Of This Game Was...
You really think it's flirting when the women aren't flirting back? Grace keeps telling him to back off, and he still keeps climbing that ladder. And many of his lines towards women are closer to predatory than flirtatious. I'd say it might be Tim Curry's delivery, but it sounds the same in the remake too.
A good chunk of Gabriel's character development borders on him casting off that behavior as part of his Schattenjager ritual (his whole encounter with the dragon). The game isn't shy about saying he has a problem with objectifying women; it's just not the part of the game that's well implemented. I've known a fair share of people who quit playing the game because they couldn't stand his character and that definitely seems like grounds for "worst" to me since the rest of the game is so good.

Re: GK: The Best/Worse Part Of This Game Was...
Well, I have always felt that his relationship with Grace was more than just work. So, I never felt that his flirting with Grace was... legit? Like he was doing it to push her buttons in jest. (And it's logical that it sounds the same in the original as it does in the remake; because they probably wanted to capture the same feel of Gabriel's character).Datadog wrote: ↑Fri Jun 08, 2018 3:51 amYou really think it's flirting when the women aren't flirting back? And I guess, I can see people stopping the game because they didn't like how Gabriel acted... but maybe in some ways I am a little disconnected (I am a pretty sensitive dude when it comes to harassing women, using the "Retarded" word {for personal reasons})... but I never felt that - even came close - to wanting to quit because I thought Gabe was unbearable. He was a character to me. So he was going to have personality ... quirks that were not aligned with mine. It's like Leisure Suit Larry... I get folks won't play it because that game is the definition of objectifying women as just something to try to sleep with... but again, the things Larry says are not aligned with my own (I've tried his pick up lines, they don't work!)... but I know it's a character made for humor's sake, so I take no issue with it.
