Marvel's Cloak & Dagger (on Freeform)

Post by Tawmis »

Anyone else catch the first two episodes?

I am going to go out on a ledge and make a bold statement some may disagree with - but these two episodes have been better than anything (yes, even Jessica Jones Season 1, which WAS great) - but Cloak & Dagger has been not slightly - but infinitely better - than the Netflix shows.

I haven't watched any of the Netflix series. I'm a big fan of Agents of SHIELD though. I did watch the first two episodes. It is pretty good, but I don't really know what to make of it just yet. I am interested enough to keep watching.

Interesting - any reason you've not watched the Netflix stuff?

With a kid around, I've had to cut back on TV time considerably. I try to keep up with Netflix's Marvel shows (finally finished Jessica Season 2 last week), but I'm a whole season behind on SHIELD (a shame, because I really loved season 4). Haven't started on Runaways, Gifted, Legion, or Inhumans. C&D will have to go on the backlog as well. The DC shows are right out.

It's a bit crazy being a superhero fan these days. :P

edit: (and probably crazier for anyone who isn't a superhero fan.)

Glad you're still able to enjoy Agents of SHIELD... I dropped that just after Ward came back to Earth. I was already struggling to enjoy it (literally forcing myself to watch it just because it was Marvel - and it had it's occasional good episodes)... but the aforementioned thing hidden in spoilers was the last straw for me. And like you, I dropped all the DC shows (which is a shame, because they were putting all the Marvel shows to shame...)

I enjoyed GIFTED. Not watched RUNAWAYS. Tried to watch LEGION - like three times - and it's like Groundhog's Day - I can't get past the 3rd Episode. But then, I hated LOST (after Season 2), which is exactly what LEGION reminds me of. Inhumans was good... Ok... it, like Agents of SHIELD had it's good and bad moments... I just hated that in it they (do not highlight if you don't want to know! Seriously spoilers for Inhumans! essentially depowered most of them almost immediately.

Assuming we're talking about the CW shows, I really did enjoy the ride for a while. But keeping track of the story across Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Legends, and Black Lightning was too cumbersome for my wife and I. Especially since there's almost a 100 episodes across five different shows per year, half of them deal with time travel and alternate realities, and it was on me to recap "the story so far" for my wife every time a new episode came on.

Incidentally, I think this is why I was never able to get into comics as a kid. :P

I remember muscling through season 3 as well. My reason for staying was that it did have VERY good episodes at its best.

The gimmick of what worked about season 4 was that they cut out all the watered-down storytelling. Instead of stretching one story across 22 episodes, they chopped up the season into three "pods", and it played out like three mini-seasons instead. My favourite was the 2nd pod, an 8-episode arc about the team gradually getting replaced by life model decoys. I think the faster-paced Netflix-style storytelling helped sustain the show's tension through that arc, and was overall a better fit for SHIELD.

For Arrow - I got sick and tired of the Flashbacks to the island. EVERY. EPISODE. And sometimes it was as trivial as him picking up a shiny penny - then BLAM - here we go! A flash back. So I dropped it.

For Flash - I got tired of EVERY main villain being a speed force villain. EVERY. TIME.

Supergirl - Was always a bit rough. It did improve when it went to CW. But by then I was burning out on the DC shows.

Legends - The time travel was fun, but the actors, for the most part, were not.

Black Lightning - Was already done watching DC shows at this point, so I never even saw an episode of it.

DC has always (in comics) been pretty notorious about time travel/alternate realities, which is why I never got much into DC comics, except for a few. Marvel was better about it - they'd do alternate reality stories, but that was it - it was an arc and it was done. But these days? Forget it. The entire Marvel Universe is a cluster #$%^ in the comics because of alternate reality characters being all over the place as constant members. They've really boinked the whole thing. There was a time I was collecting like 30 different Marvel titles. Now it's like 5... and 4 of them I am about to drop.

I did hear it got better. And they even did a storyline with the OTHER Ghost Rider.

YES! And they keep extending his backstory every season, so there's always more to flashback to! Remember that time he was on the island? Well, he also went to China! And Russia! And Mars!*
*that's a joke, unless he actually did visit Mars this season.
For Flash - I got tired of EVERY main villain being a speed force villain. EVERY. TIME.
Which is so weird because they have Captain Cold, Mirror Master and Gorilla Grodd right there!
Supergirl - Was always a bit rough. It did improve when it went to CW. But by then I was burning out on the DC shows.
CW did wonders for the show. That's also when they moved filming to Vancouver and we occasionally got to see them film it in the streets outside. We once watched them film a panicking crowd outside our window with explosions going off all day - for 20 seconds of B-roll footage.
Legends - The time travel was fun, but the actors, for the most part, were not.
I like how it's a lot more goofy and fun to follow, but yeah, the cast seems like a potluck of characters from different shows who don't necessarily have chemistry. And it never helps the writing when Firestorm needs two actors to work, and they KEEP SPLITTING UP.
Black Lightning - Was already done watching DC shows at this point, so I never even saw an episode of it.
Ha ha, same. Though I've heard it's really good. It's a pain because we don't have cable right now, this is the only one we get on Netflix Canada, and I don't feel right watching it without keeping up with the others.

Well, I am sure he went to Mars at some point - when he meets Martian Manhunter from Supergirl, he will flash to the island, that transported him to Mars, where he was rescued by Martian Manhunter who brought him back to Earth and placed him on the island... give it time.

Yes, he has an entire Rogue's Gallery to choose from... but it's always Alternate Barry... Alternate Flash... Alternate Speed Force... someone else who got the speed force...

Shame I don't watch it, because I had such a crush on the girl who played Killer Frost. Similar to my crush on the female scientist in Agents of SHIELD. (They're a lot a like, actually...)

Actually, I don't have Netflix. And I never was invested in the MCU enough to follow every show they put out anyway.

As for the other shows people have mentioned:

I never watched any of the CW shows.

I really like Legion but I don't think I could recommend it to anyone.

The Gifted is pretty good. I still watch Gotham but it hasn't been all that great since after the first season

Heh, I've been collecting Marvel Comics for over 40 years. So I am thrilled to see them being done right. :)

I dropped out of Gotham when they killed... uh, was it Jeremy... who seemed to be the Joker... (I hear he's back though). Just never cared enough to pick it back up.

That's what I love about the current superhero fad(?). Thanks to the MCU opening so many doors and pushing our suspension of belief, we're now at the point where Green Arrow traveling to Mars and teaming up with Manhunter can be a legit plot on prime-time television. There's pros and cons to this, of course, but we've come far since 2011, back when people still weren't sure if we were ready for a "Thor" movie.

All they had to do was show this in the THOR trailer and all the women were ready for a Thor movie...

Jerome. And he's dead again, sort of. It gets even more convoluted. It's not really worth picking back up at this point.

How can anyone be "sort of" dead? I'm confused. :? Surely, a person or a character is either alive or dead - there's no in-between. (Unless you happen to be undead, of course). :P
