Ooh! Or, if we're going back to Japan, the story of the Forty-Seven Ronin is legendary.

For a Japanese depiction, Hana yori mo Naho is excellent. For a Westernised one, 47 Ronin is a good introduction to the full story (even if it doesn't meet the high Japanese expectations).

Just as long as you don't head into Aokigahara while you're in Japan.

If we're going to India, maybe the hero/heroine can have a talwar for a sword. ("You see those warriors from Hammerfell? They have curved swords...")

Anyway, Indian-history-wise... perhaps it's best to set it during the time of the Maurya Empire, the first empire to unite India after the withdrawal of the Persians and Greeks (under Alexander the Great). It was the largest empire to have ever existed in the Indian subcontinent, and certainly one of the most populous in the world, with an estimated 50 to 60 million people. Land-wise, it covered today's India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Iran. Mauryan India also enjoyed an era of social harmony, religious transformation, and expansion of the sciences and of knowledge. After a particularly bloody war, Ashoka (the third emperor) was said to be so full of remorse that he embraced Buddhism, which was the foundation of social and political peace and non-violence across all of India. Ashoka sponsored the spreading of Buddhist missionaries into Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia, West Asia, North Africa, and Mediterranean Europe.
