Request for Screenshot(s) - Diskette Install message(s)

Post by goatmeal »

Hello, all.

This is a kind of strange request. I'm looking for at least one example screenshot of the type of install messages that would accompany the later Sierra games that had numerous diskettes.

I don't mean the set-up screen for graphics, music, mouse, etc. Instead, I'm looking for the messages that Sierra included to keep your attention while the data was being transferred to the hard disk drive prior to the set-up screen. Here's a rather poor example of what I'm talking about:

========================================
So, you're installing this game...

While we're waiting, why not complete the warranty registration
card? You'll get lots of neat stuff from Sierra, starting with our
undying gratitude. Just add a stamp and put it in the mailbox.

Lots of other people have already done it; you don't want to be
left out, do you?
========================================

(Insert Disk 5 and press Enter)

It doesn't matter what the message is -or- which game it comes from. I just want to ensure that I have the correct color scheme and formatting to mimic the look and feel of those messages for a parody that I'm working on. I'm pretty sure it used the standard 8x16 VGA font, and it seemed like it was the standard grey typeface on blue background (like in the old DOS Edit and QBasic programs)...

Unfortunately, my Sierra games are already "installed" in DOSBox. Also, I don't have a floppy drive in my current machine, nor do I have any ISO or FLP images to "re-install" these games in DOSBox to see what those screens would look like.

Thanks for any help you can provide! :)

Those were mostly SCI games. If your games include "INSTALL.EXE", "INSTALL.SCR", "INSTALL.TXT", and "INSTALL.HLP" you cn mount its folder in DOSBox as a floppy drive and if you also mount another folder as C: and run INSTALL.EXE from your "A:" drive you can see the installer.

Thank you for the screenshot, Collector! As always, you're the best. :)

And thanks for explaining how to achieve it in DOSBox without a floppy drive -- I will certainly try that out later tonight.

Guess I was wrong about the color schemes... Glad I asked!

Heh. I remember those screens ... I don't think I've seen them since the CD-ROM days, though. ;)

Now this may be a strange question, but I'm just wondering ... in Sierra game terms, did the rise of the CD-ROM also mean the rise of the "talkie" adventure games? *thinks* I don't think I remember a "talkie" game that came on floppy disks.

("Talkies", of course, are the opposite of "silent" films or games. It's a very old-fashioned word, but why not revive it? :) LSL1 EGA is a silent game. QfG5 is a "talkie". And so on.) ;)

Speech, even compressed to a low quality, takes up a lot of space. It would take dozens to hundreds of floppies, which would be completely unreasonable. So yes, they only started with voice acting once CD-ROMs made it feasible. King's Quest 5 was their first CD-ROM game and their first game with full speech.

Though, there does exist a demo of Conquests of the Longbow with speech, even though the full game has none interestingly enough.

If you still have the Java runtime installed: http://sierrahelp.com/jDOSBox/jDOSBox.html
