My playthrough
I am making steady progress. Day 3 right now. I am playing the floppy version at this time. For some reason, this game just isn't doing it for me. It's not bad, but I just don't find it particularly funny or whimsical or... anything really. Everything sort of just falls flat for me. I realize that I'm not the target demographic anymore, but I'm not completely without a sense of humor. I think it could use an infusion of Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy or something.
The other thing that is off-putting is the user interface. My only other experience with a Dynamix adventure game is Rise of the Dragon and it just feels really cumbersome in comparison to Sierra's. I'm willing to bet that everyone who has ever played Rise of the Dragon didn't put their clothes on their first time playing. Clicking on the character brings up the inventory. To use an item you "float" the item out of the window. You have to drag a new item onto the character to put it in inventory. Esc brings up the control menu. Right-click to cycle through action icons. I know that part of it is just experience with Sierra's interface, but here everything seems to require an added step or two.
The game is also on a timer like Rise of the Dragon. I'm not sure how that will work out. I remember that with RotD, if you are very quick with doing things, you end up having to just wait through a whole day near the end because there is nothing for you to do. I don't really think that it's a very good game design. It leaves you wondering if you haven't done something to advance the plot.

I'd say more like an infusion of Josh Mandel or Al Lowe.notbobsmith wrote: ↑Fri Nov 09, 2018 6:45 pm I think it could use an infusion of Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy or something.

Oh, it's not because you're not the demographic anymore... That's exactly how I felt when I first played Willy way back in the day too. And when I tried to replay it a few years back, it's how I still felt.notbobsmith wrote: ↑Fri Nov 09, 2018 6:45 pm I am making steady progress. Day 3 right now. Something's missing from that game to give it any... charm.

That also works.
I was searching for a word that best sums up what it is missing. "Charm" is probably the best one.Tawmis wrote: ↑Sat Nov 10, 2018 10:58 am

And hence why I say Josh Mandel. KQ1SCI was his baby and is probably one of the most charming of the KQ games.

Re: My playthrough
I am oddly... stuck. It's day 4 and I am in the guard's office. It "odd" because it seems like I am very limited by what I can do. I can't leave the office, meaning that the solution is with what I have in inventory and what is in the office. It seems like I should have stumbled across the solution by now. This does seem to be a pattern with the game. Every once in a while it backs you into a corner and you have to find the way out. And it gives you red herrings where you think you solved it but you haven't. Still working on it. So far these puzzles have been solvable with what I have. I don't think I'm missing anything.

Got it. Strange solution that I only got by trying random things. Note to self: don't get too hung up on the Red Herring solution.

Re: My playthrough
I thought about this... and I think I figured it out.
Willy Beamish reminds me of Dennis the Menace.
Like it's supposed to be... funny... cute at times... but it simply isn't.
No offense to anyone who like Dennis the Menace, but I never understood the appeal of that comic strip.

Re: My playthrough
Given its release in the early '90s, I was thinking that they were trying to be The Simpsons with Willy as Bart. Only they failed and didn't go far enough with the familial dysfunction and pointed satire. I guess Dennis the Menace fits. It's been ages since I read the strip so I don't remember how it went. I think my local paper had it at some point, but I think it disappeared in favor of other strips. And this was probably back in the '80s. But as I recall, he's a troublemaker without being malicious, so I guess that works. But you are right. Willy Beamish is trying to be funny or cute, but it just doesn't work.Tawmis wrote: ↑Mon Nov 12, 2018 8:28 pm I thought about this... and I think I figured it out.

I remember that about RotD. I never finished that game - just couldn't be bothered. It was so ... slow.notbobsmith wrote: ↑Fri Nov 09, 2018 6:45 pmI'm willing to bet that everyone who has ever played Rise of the Dragon didn't put their clothes on their first time playing.
As for Willy Beamish ... meh. I can't remember any of it after about day 4. I tried playing it in the Win9x days and couldn't finish it, then tried it again a year or two ago and just gave up.
I thought it was cute, but not very clever.

Re: My playthrough
Grrr. Stuck again. I was looking at the technical help pages and found this:
Problem - Rescuing Horny Bug:
Late in the game, when rescuing Horny from the Cook, even 66Mhz was too fast.
So I am at this point in the game. It does say that DOSBox is a solution, but I am just wondering if this is my problem. I think I have the cook immobilized and I can push two buttons. One causes the conveyer to speed up like crazy. The other one... causes me to run from the room and I lose the game. I could still just be missing something, But I want to make sure that this isn't a technical issue.

Have you tried messing with the DOSBox Cycles to slow it down?notbobsmith wrote: ↑Sun Nov 18, 2018 8:11 pm Grrr. Stuck again. I was looking at the technical help pages and found this:

Re: My playthrough
Not yet, but I'm not actually sure if anything is wrong. I probably just haven't figured out the solution, but I thought I would check to see if there are any bugs I need to be aware of. I was wondering how the "Rescuing Horny" bug manifests itself.Tawmis wrote: ↑Mon Nov 19, 2018 10:52 amHave you tried messing with the DOSBox Cycles to slow it down?notbobsmith wrote: ↑Sun Nov 18, 2018 8:11 pm Grrr. Re: My playthrough
Just finished Willy Beamish. I did end up having to get a hint for where I was stuck for a while. It turns out that I had to use the tablecloth near the suit of armor instead of on it like I had tried.
I'm not really a fan of Willy Beamish. Like I mentioned before, I didn't find it funny or even amusing. Jokes sort of just fall flat. Willy isn't really that interesting of a character. You are given a small amount of freedom with his actions with some of his dialogue choices and actions that affect his "Trouble Meter" and I get the impression they want him to be a "likeable troublemaker" type of character but they really don't pull that off. He's just sort of dull. He's a kid who doesn't like school and likes to play video games. That's it. Each member of the family is given a single trait and even then they don't do much with it. The ghost of his grandfather talks to him which ought to be interesting, but again, they do nothing with it. I guess the best thing that I can say about the story is that it's inoffensive. It's not crude (despite the whole plot being about plumbers and a "Sludgeworks" the toilet humor wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be) or obnoxious, but it's not very enjoyable either.
The other issue that I had with it was the gameplay. As I mentioned, the inventory system is clumsy. Everything seems to require an extra step to do. If you try to use an item on something where it can't be used, it goes to the corner of the screen so you have to pick it up and try again. Occasionally an item need to be aimed, so you have to right-click to cycle through the icons until you get a crosshairs icon. I found out that this was a thing by accident. Yes, it's in the in-game instructions (but not the print manual) but it's just an unnecessary complication. Fumbling with the inventory and icons like this made puzzles where you are under time pressure really frustrating. Some of the puzzles themselves felt like the game was trying to cheat you. There were a few times where it seemed to offer a solution that was missing one more piece of the puzzle, only to have the actual solution be totally different. I spent a lot of time chasing my tail on some of the puzzles. This also bothered me: after I get the hint for where I am stuck I am able to solve the puzzle in the kitchen. As I leave the kitchen, I get caught and the game shows the "death" cutscene. So I am thinking to myself "What am I missing now?" It turns out that the cutscene continues and I can progress with the game. But the first couple times I kept restoring before it played out because it started the same as the death cutscene I was getting before. Not cool.
So that's about it. Next, I will play the CD version with a walkthrough. Adding voices almost certainly won't help the overall experience, but it can make things much worse. I'll see what happens.
Other observations:
TNG cameo. Hey, why is Worf in his yellow uniform, but Geordi still in his red?
