I have now uninstalled the installer version and reinstalled it, to see if something went wrong during the process last time.
Oddly, I had told the installer to keep my savegames, and they seem to be there, but in the game I can't see them.

Your save games should be in a folder on your desktop with the same name as the game. Just drop them back into the newly installed folder. They should be in the same folder as the RESOURCE.CFG, I think named "save".

Since I was already at chapter 4 when I read that I just went on from where I was, and believe it or not I went past the hangup point and just finished the game! It hadn't installed properly the first time.
