Typically, no.

The "best way" to speak with a dragon is to inflate their ego.

Or offer them a considerable bribe? ;)

In other words, something like a gyro, a pepperoni-and-jalapeno pizza, or a box of chocolates probably won't be sufficient. (You know - for this guy...) ;)

Hah! I've always disliked these graphics... felt like, oddly enough, a step backwards.

D&D tonight (last night?) was a success!
The party narrowly dodged a cave full of piercers!
Then were greeted by a woman's ghost pleading for help before it vanished!
They arrived at small village with a lot of commotion in the town center.
Turns out the town's medic acquired an ancient item from the Broken Lands and fell under it's influence.
The small (mining) village discovered creatures as they mined further and were being killed...
So the village's medic, using this ancient staff, turned to necromancy - raising the dead to do the mining!
Naturally the village was against it - and recruited out would be heroes!
As the heroes head for the cave that the medic has holed himself in - a black dragon lands and offers them a deal.
Bring the staff to him and he can free the cleric of the cursed gauntlet.
The party takes a chance and declines the dragon's offer - and survive - as the dragon says, "I will give you a chance to recover it before you decide!"
Party goes in and fights a pack of ghouls, then some ochre jelly, then a flesh golem, then a flaming skull (formerly the medic)
They defeat him and the rogue touches the staff - and becomes possessed
The wizard thumps her over the head and knocks her out
The party uses Mage Hand to carry the staff out - only to be greeted by the black dragon upon exiting
He offers to free the cleric of the cursed gauntlet; but the cleric doesn't trust the dragon so she declines
The dwarf wizard mage hand's the staff to the black dragon who "promised" to destroy it - but flies off with it!
The party hits level 4! Hooray!

 Hooray! Never trust a dragon! :D

But, uh-oh - the flameskull (formerly the medic) has the power of Rejuvenation - i.e. if the flameskull is destroyed, it regains all its hit points in 1 hour unless holy water is sprinkled on its remains or a dispel magic or remove curse spell is cast on them. I hope the party did this?

Also, d'aww ... poor villagers. No more medic to heal their wounds. :( :P

The party does not know this about the Flameskull.

And this is certainly not the last they've heard of this dragon either...

Tonight is the "Work Game" D&D Game.
http://tawmis.com/kneurth/adventure-not ... dventurers

They will be continuing to help Spire's Edge, a town decimated by a recent dragon and kobold attack. Having helped clear out the mine, so the town can begin getting mineral resources for trades and purchases; now something's come up to the East, in regards to the Jade Forest, their primary source of lumber, needed for building establishments in Spire's Edge. The mayor of the town will be sending the party to investigate what's happened, and why workers are coming back, reporting that they refuse to go inside the woods... giving our would be heroes, very little information as to what might be wrong...

What's happened? Well, when the other adventurers (Anita's game, that I run) failed to save the Dryad (http://tawmis.com/kneurth/adventure-not ... e-notes-05), she was sacrificed, a fallen angel (but Chaotic Evil) who was imprisoned in the tree was released; who then lured the Unicorn of the woods, broke off it's horn and pierced the Unicorn's heart and changed it into a Nightmare and escaped to the West... Now, the forest, with no Dryad and no Unicorn to protect it, has fallen into corruption... and what was once a beautiful forest is now a living hell...

That Solar would be a mighty ally, if its alignment was LG. Since it is CE now, it is a fearsome enemy. I hope the party doesn't come across it.

But even if the party slays the Nightmare, how can they fix the situation, with that CE Solar still around?

The CE Solar and the Nightmare is actually the other party's quest (Anita's Group)... They're the reason the Dryad and Unicorn were killed (decided to go after Brigands, rather than save the Dryad). So (Work Group), is basically going there because the woods have become corrupted since the Dryad was killed. (Hint: There's a Green Hag who has taken up residence next to the Great Tree (also called "The Spear" - see the lore behind the tree here) that once held the CE Solar imprisoned. The Dryad and the Unicorn were the guardians. So Green Hags thrive on innocence lost/disasters - so she was drawn here by the death of two great good things being horribly slain (the dryad and the unicorn), and has been using her foul magics to change the land around her - and in doing so, summoning dark creatures (basilisk, displace beast, to name a few) to take up residence. The forested area around the hag has turned into more of a jungle, than a forest, overgrown with odd trees, vines, and the like.

Turned out pretty fun - because the party, after clearing out the mines (from the previous adventure), went to the town of Spire's Edge (which is a decimated town, that had previously been attacked by a dragon and kobolds - related to yet ANOTHER game I was running with my wife, and close friends - see more about the attack here), and claimed their prize (200 gp) for clearing out the mines, so that they can return to the mines to gather resources to continue rebuilding Spire's Edge. The Paladin, who worships the goddess of sex and hedonism, went ahead and supported his goddess by going to a brothel. The War Priest (worshiping the god of thunder) went to bed. The Life Priest (worshiping the Goddess of Life) thought he'd go enjoy himself at the brothel too, but didn't get much in the way of getting lucky. The Elf Wizard and Dragonborn Bard went to the tavern - where the Bard got blitzed on "Dragon's Breath" (Sound familiar?). Started a fight in the bar, ended up arrested. Next morning, the party had to use some of their newly acquired gold to help pay to get the bard out of the "drunk tank" and pay the owner of the tavern for the damages inflicted. Then, the wizard had to pay more gold to get cursed dagger that was asserting control over him removed. So there was some fun RP moments in the town, before the actual adventure of heading to the Jade Forest to see what's going on there. (They were sent there because the mayor of the Spire's Edge reported that his workers who use the Jade Forest as their primary source of lumber - needed to help build up the town (structures, walls, etc) - refused to enter the woods now because "something feels off."

 I certainly know where you got Dragon's Breath from. ;)

A Paladin who worships the goddess of sex and hedonism? Now there is something you don't see every day. Still. I can just imagine the bed talk. "By the power of [fill in goddess's name here]!" :P

The Life Priest didn't get lucky. I wonder why. Did his flirting act consist of admonishing the young-girls-who-don't-seem-to-have-too-much-clothing, giving them a pamphlet, and urging them not to do it again? "Come to my tent for a cup of tea, a bun, and a sing-song"? :P ;)

ROFL!

By the way, I'm not sure what's going on but the forum keeps logging me out. I tried to post in BBP's birthday thread but the forum said "You must be logged in to post here" and logged me out. I logged back in and tried to post again - and the forum kicked me out again.

I logged back in, tried to post ... nope, nada, nothing, not allowed. Nyah nyah. :x

After 4 or 5 tries at this, I gave up and PMed BBP to wish her a happy birthday.

What in the world is going on??? :(

Tomorrow's D&D game (Anita's group) is going to be interesting... going to try to do something I've never done before.

A Murder Mystery. The party has been escorting this caravan (protecting it from brigands and the like, and doing side missions at various stops along the way). Well, tomorrow they will arrive at Ridgecrest (which, if your familiar with Forgotten Realms, it's the equivalent of Waterdeep - essentially THE major city hub). One of the things on the caravan is a unique piece of art from some island. The owner is an extremely rich (and over the top) human who insists on the party coming to his celebration (to show off the jade statue), as a means of thanking them for its safe passage. The list of NPCs have quirks (as well as qualms with other NPCs there), that the party can talk to them about and see the quirks (twirls her hair all the time, left eye blinks non stop, etc) - and then one of the NPCs turns up dead. The mansion is locked down. As the party investigates, more NPCs will slowly begin being killed off.

The cause? A Doppleganger! Now the party will be able to identify the Doppleganger IF they pay attention to what I said, about their quirks and stuff, because the Doppleganger will not have those same quirks.

So it's less fighting, and more, trying to figure out who the murderer is...
