I knew I'd seen it before on this topic, but when I went searching it turned out to be a tad different...

Thanks, BBP! Yes, I remember that thread. Since that thread (2011???
we've passed a lot of water since then!), I've educated myself in Greek, Roman, Irish, Egyptian
and Norse mythology, as well as a whole bunch of other ancient stuff (including Hercules's life story). Mythology FTW!
So in answer to Tawm's question - i.e. this...

Well, there's quite a few Hercules based movies; but of course, none are... well, "historically" accurate (can be it be historically accurate if it's based off legends and stories?)
You're right, there's no "historically" accurate Hercules. But the life-story of Hercules - at least, according to the myths about him - is pretty well established. Here it is, on Amazon:
Hercules, The First Superhero by Philip Matyszak.
Phil is one of my favourite authors when it comes to ancient Greece and Rome. He has a PhD in Greek and Roman history from Oxford, and he teaches e-learning courses in ancient History at Cambridge - so he knows his stuff. But although he brings in the facts, he doesn't over-complicate. His books are clear, concise and lots of fun!
If you were ever curious about Hercules, or centaurs, or Cerberus, or anything to do with the ancient world, I highly recommend this book.
So to come back to Tawm's question ... (too late?) ... what I'm getting at is a film based on Hercules as he really was: not the squeaky-clean Disney hero, but the deeply flawed but lovable human hero. The real Hercules, who achieved so much not because he was a demi-god, but
in spite of being a demi-god. He made lots of mistakes, especially when he was drunk, but he was man enough to admit them and make amends. He was loyal to his friends (unless he got too drunk!
), and when the sh*t hit the fan, he never said "Not my fault, not my problem, someone else can deal with this." What's not to like?
