KQ6 - Enhanced - On Vista - Possible?
HI all,
As per title, is there any way to play KQ6 the Enhanced version with hi-res portraits on Vista?
Thanks!

Hello, welcome to the forums. Vista 32, yes, just install the Windows version. Vista 64, not without an emulator. If you can wait, ScummVM is adding support for SCI games. So far few VGA SCI games are completely playable. I will say that it seems taht the development of the Free SCI code has been picking up a much faster pace since it was merged into ScummVM.

Hi there, and thank you for your reply.
You've partly answered my next question - I have got it running in ScummVM fine, and its almost certainly the best option these days (as its cross-platform and has graphics filtering etc).
However, ScummVM loads the 'non-enhanced' version. I don't understand the mechanics of it, clearly, but was wondering if you might have any ideas to force the enhanced version?

I don't think that there is a way. BTW, DOSBox is cross-platform and has graphics filtering, too.

Re: KQ6 - Enhanced - On Vista - Possible?
I can't get the windows version of KQ6 going on DOSBox. I can get the dos version going though!
2 other things, if I may:
- I saw a guy on youtube that was playing the game and it was using music from the CD instead of midi, for in-game music - is this correct?
- On scummvm i've got the midi routed through fluidsynth using a good soundfont, so games like Day Of The Tentacle have realistic 'orchestral' music. .
Anyone succeeded in doing anything like this for Kings Quest?

The in game music in KQ6 is MIDI, regardless of which version. The closing song, Girl in the Tower is a CD audio track though. You can get the Windows version to run in DOSBox if you install Win3x in it first, but you need the install disks for 3x to do so. Keep in mind that with the Win3x drivers, the music will be sub par as compared to the DOS.

Eh, only for the FM Synth right? I thought it'd be the exact same under DOSBox if you set the midi mapper to whatever that passthrough option is called (midi i/o or something like that).Collector wrote:Keep in mind that with the Win3x drivers, the music will be sub par as compared to the DOS.

I have tried to map it to something else, but had no luck. It has been some time since I have tried. Improvements since to DOSBox may help.

Re: KQ6 - Enhanced - On Vista - Possible?
Managed to get the MIDI routed through a synth called 'SGM-V2.01' - did a little recording from the opening scenes.
I think it sounds a bit better than the original, what do you think? (see mp3 attached)
Did this using
- DOSBox / Dos Version
- These instructions http://forums.scummvm.org/viewtopic.php ... sc&start=0
- And this soundfont: http://www.geocities.jp/shansoundfont/
Took me ages, and perhaps the payoff wasn't quite worth it!

And that was with Win3x in DOSBox?

That was with XP
Re: KQ6 - Enhanced - On Vista - Possible?
The DOS version of KQ6 in DOSBox already sounds great with general MIDI. It is the MIDI drivers for 3x that makes the music sound like crap in Win3x in DOSBox.

Unfortunately, I don't have 3.1 I threw my diskettes out many years ago, otherwise I'd be tempted to test it out!
Re: KQ6 - Enhanced - On Vista - Possible?
I found a set in a Thrift store for about $4 a few years back.
