RPG sale gong on at GOG, for those who are interested. :) I have a few RPGs, but I thought I'd pick up this one:

The Age of Decadence

...and its companion...

Dungeon Rats

...because I like RPGs and I like ancient Rome. ;) Plus, they're both on sale. Win-win! :)

Take a look. They look pretty decent. :D

GOG sale of Sierra/LucasArts games ... what's your view?

Post by Rath Darkblade »

... well, there's GOG a sale Sierra/LucasArts games again. ;) Some that caught my eye are:

1. The Dig
2. The Police Quest series
3. The Colonel's Bequest
4. The Last Express

Of these, I've played only PQ1 and 2 to completion. I don't think I ever got started with PQ3, and never seen PQ4. Are they "worth" seeing? All I know about them is that they are divisive -- i.e. some fans thought they were fantastic, others thought they were horrible. What's your view? :)

I haven't played "The Dig", but I'm a big fan of Michael Land's music. :) He wrote the music for most of the games in the LucasArts "Golden Age" period - Monkey Island, Indiana Jones, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max Hit the Road, Full Throttle. Grim Fandango. Most of the Star Wars games of the 90s and 2000s. Plus, dialogue by Orson Scott Card. :D What's your view of this game?

I haven't yet played "The Last Express" either, but I like the pre-WW1 era depicted in the game. I don't often see an indie game I like, but I'm definitely onto this one. Have you played it? What did you think? :)

Lastly, "The Colonel's Bequest" ... hum. I know that it uses the same "time slot" mechanics that were used in GK2, GK3 and Laura Bow 2 (and LSL2, to a lesser extent -- i.e. on the ship). Personally, I'm not a big fan of the "time slot" mechanic because, if I don't know what I'm doing (and I probably won't without a hintbook or a walk through), I'll just blunder through, get to a late stage of the game (perhaps), and then find out that I'm stuck. :( Was this your experience?

Just wondering ...

PQ4 has its issues, but I loved it. It has a much more real story, and I think the LAPD aspect of it works really well.

Colonel's Bequest is an amazing game. You can easily miss things, yes. But it won't mean you're stuck. Just means when you reach the end, you will have less information to make your educated guess as to "Who did it."

Easy replay value to go back and spy more on all the rooms, to see what you missed as you discover things going through the game.

Things like missing certain scenes in LB1 or even outright missing points in any Sierra adventure game doesn't really line up well with the modern OCD trend of having to "achieve all the achievements" or not miss a single thing. Back then it didn't matter. Even for me, however, it's hard to adapt back to that state of mind. I'm a collector and an over-achiever when it comes to game tasks so I want to get and see EVERYTHING a game has to offer. But you can't look at it so discouragingly. It's okay. The game is designed to allow you to miss some things and still beat it. It rubs us wrong now but I don't think that back then it was something to worry about per se.

I feel the same about the Rumplestiltskin puzzle in the original KQ1. Yeah, it's a nigh impossible puzzle solution, but it didn't dead end you. It was a reward for taking extra time to figure things out and think outside the box. It wasn't necessary. People love to rag on that puzzle as an example of how badly the game was designed, but personally I think it was a genius way to extend gameplay, make the player feel smart and accomplished, and fit within the resource limits of the time. You can't do that stuff nowadays because games aren't nearly as limited so there's no excuse. But it was very clever back then and I appreciate that puzzle being thrown in.

Hmm. I think I might try LB1 next, then. :) Thank you. I'm deeply immersed in Witcher 2 and PQ3 (not so much in PQ4) right now. ;)
