[2020] The Time To Guess Is At Hand!

Post by *The Butler »

Please make guesses as your regular self as I am about to disable the MASQ accounts. :)

Please remember to use the SPOILER tags when making your guesses so you don't ruin it for anyone else!

I also recommend adding "....." at the end of the person's true name so the spoiler tags look longer than the names! That way it doesn't make it too easy for others to guess without actually checking spoilers!

So for example rather than say "I think The Butler is Tawmis"

You'd say "I think The Butler is Tawmis........"

Also reveal who you are in Spoilers, so when you post guessing others - it's not easy to see, "Hey Tawmis didn't guess who the Butler was! He must be the Butler!"

So for example I would do:

MASQ01 was BBP.....................
MASQ02 was none other than me!
MASQ03 was clearly Jules
MASQ04 Was probably notbobsmith because of how he answered Question01
MASQ05 must be Rath, as the last person!

Also if someone guesses who you are put the Correct or Incorrect in spoilers so it doesn't sway someone else's guess unless they want to see the spoiler.

Feel free to put the "justification" for your guesses in the spoiler, when you're guessing for extra points and fun!

The MASQs were:

Blunt guess (maybe for next year it's a good idea to guess as your alter ego)
* Clippy ... based on posting time, references to programming and owning old computers I guessed notbobsmith )
* Dragotha ...for a time I thought it may have been Jules but especially with the classical music and Chandler and LSL - and Jules would have known what Charleston I was talking about , hehe.
* Influenza ...Qbix because of posting time (you're not peeking, are you?)
* Sokka In the end I settled for Jules for the low posting frequency. And the dog nickname post.

That would be fine, but I am not seeing what the benefit vs guessing as your normal self?

It's just easier, from an Admin perspective, to disable the MASQ accounts at one time - and not leave it open for someone who may take awhile to respond.

Hello again, Jules! :D How are you?

My guesses ...

* Clippy was notbobsmith (thanks to talk about old computers) ;)
* Dragotha was me! That's right, I definitely got into Ray Chandler and all that jazz this year ;)
* Influenza was BBP! All the talk of infections etc. reminded me of the time earlier this year when BBP went to a concert and came back with the flu. :( No good. Hope you're better, BBP! :)
* And by process of elimination, Sokka must be Jules! :D

And of course, *The Butler was Tawm. (Don't spoil yourself by peeking at that one! Shame on you if you do!) :P

Thanks, Tawm! That was fun. :)

Incidentally, I've had a thought for my MASQ character next year - possibly the only thing in the world that could be scarier than a dracolich, i.e. this guy.

Oh wait, what am I thinking about. The horror! ;)

Pleasure was mine! Was hoping for a few more people to turn out and participate, but such is life!

Next year, if I am around, and the site's still here, I will probably PM/DM folks to see if they're interested in participating.

Rath... as the last Mr. Boddy - I've got to ask - where/what were the clues given in your attacks? Because the clues are somehow supposed to reference the "MASQ ID" avatar (so it would have referenced your * Dragotha avatar... and for the life of me... I don't see the clues?

Certainly no pogo stick in the avatar... the Leisurely would reference you (played Leisure Suit Larry, perhaps) but doesn't apply to the avatar... and the none shall be sick again? Because Dragotha is a lich (and already dead?) :geek:
*Mr. Boddy wrote: Sat Oct 31, 2020 1:41 am Dratted healing! I attack * Influenza again!!! >=)

The advantage is that you can make your suggestions without having to add your own name.

Plus, if you'd like I could help set up a reminder. Or maybe a mailing to all members (great way to contact members who don't visit much anymore!).

And may I make a request? Can you open a Poetry Corner next year? Please?

For the aficionadoes, here's my confession:

The Masq was put up hastily this year, and I had such trouble coming up with a character - I didn't want to do anyone from House now that I've outed myself as a fan, I didn't want to use a comic or cartoon since I had Cornfed and Cosmo and Calcifer before (which one competitor pointed out - then again Cornfed was about the worst possible choice :D ). And we had to be so quick since there were only 2 weeks of October left.
I noticed Qbix hadn't joined - I mailed him to ask if he was going to join. He couldn't make it but told me he had thought of coming as Corona.
That would be too much for me but it's a great idea for a U/N still, so I picked Influenza, which can also be deadly but is considered to be relatively harmless (that is, unless you're having it.)

I left hints all over the place:
-In A-Z, I mentioned Heathen (staunch atheist), Larry (LSL), Quelle and Xaver (German phone alphabet - I use this every day because of my job), Yankee (another phone alphabet) and "Up and atom" (which is Radioactive Man's catchphrase. Radioactive Man is from The Simpsons).
-2 Lies One Truth (I noticed my remarks went unanswered here and there - it does tend to get chaotic, doesn't it :D) I did my best not to leave any hints, besides the one in this post - these statements are all Primus lyrics.
I'm a keen artist but I realized too late that the Singer statement gives away whether I am Rath or not, so I shouldn't use that again.
-I listen to rock, but that should be a no-good-clue, along the lines of "I play adventure games"
-The last book I read was about genetics. I don't like Beatles or action movies.
-During lockdown (technically we didn't have lockdown here, but you know...) I got, among others, my forklift driving certificate. :geek:
-I watch snooker.
-In I Question Your Character I posted Baldric (misspelled, sorry) from Blackadder, Toto Santos from Grim Fandango "You asked for bunny!"), James Wilson (I meant "House" but on purpose picked a relatively generic name - there's also a James Wilson in Gold Rush!).
-And in It's Time To Rhyme I did some impromptu poetry.

Besides that I had massive fun inventing the adventure-game style bits in The Weapons Of Clue and You! I'm not too fond of the three games but I guess a game is what you make of it. Maybe I could write my own game - I'm just real bad at coherent stories.
In these I used a lot of game references that are lesser known, as a nod to my scripts: "Pretty much fun eh!" is from LSL2 when you put a random item in the onklunk, "It must weigh all of 10 pounds!" is LSL7 when you try to pick up the lamp, and the "new ventilation system" is from an obscure death in SQ3.

I see. That makes sense. I can just make it by 11/7 the MASQ accounts disable, so if someone doesn't come in by then to lay down a guess, they'd need to do it as their normal account. A week is a fair amount of time.
BBP wrote: Mon Nov 02, 2020 12:07 pm Plus, if you'd like I could help set up a reminder. Or maybe a mailing to all members (great way to contact members who don't visit much anymore!).
If this was my forum, I'd do that (email all the users) - but this is Collector's and some might feel it spammy (especially people who haven't been here in a long time). But I could gather up "The Regulars" and send an email/PM.
BBP wrote: Mon Nov 02, 2020 12:07 pm And may I make a request? Can you open a Poetry Corner next year? Please?
I welcome others to make new threads! Folks have made their own threads previously for MASQ! Were you not able to make new topics with the MASQ ID? It might have been a setting, which I'd need to check.

You're not a fan of the three "CLUE" related games? (If I am reading that correctly) It's mostly there for silly fun - you can pick up clues as to who is behind the MASQ by how they write something, is the only purpose it serves. I don't want all the games to be about directly revealing something about yourself. I want some to be more subtle.

Sorry we missed you SHP!

Tawm - the reason I didn't want to start the poetry thread is I am afraid it gives away too much. I started a poetry thread as Stephenie Meyer and as Mrs. White (or actually by BBP since I forgot to change my login. :D )

In pointless trivia I posted a lengthy comment on an article in The Guardian in rhyme earlier this year. It's... well... as good as you can get as a non-native speaker who speaks a third language all day :D but I had fun doing that.

Whoops! Sorry, Tawm - I forgot that I had to put down clues, or for what. :( Sorry!

BBP, if we can do a poetry thread, maybe we can do a limerick thread? ;) Or ... how about the Alliterative Headline game -- where you make up a newspaper headline, and all the words start with the same letter? For instance:

Closing Carrot Cake Costs Crying Cat Chef :P (About a cat chef who sells a carrot cake, turns his back to close the box, and the customer shoplifts cookies) ;)

Or

Panicky Precinct Police Ponks Punk :P (About an entire police department that *ponks* people on the head with foam rubber) ;)

The sillier, the better! What do you think? ;)

 You slay me.

That's the whole point of the Mr. Boddy one! You're supposed to attack and leave a CLUE to who you are - can be as vague as you want it!

Like, "I strike at the Butler! No bones about it!" (would indicate the dracolich)
Or, "Feel the sting! I strike Butler!" (would indicate the sword seen in the avatar)
Or be as vague as, "I see you Butler!" indicating your avatar has eyes.

And people can't GUESS who Mr. Boddy is, without citing what clue(s) they're using to make their guess.

To prevent just going down the list of MASQ IDs and eventually guessing that way. :D

First of all, everyone was correct about me, so there is no point in concealing that I was * Clippy. Some of you pointed out the old computers that I mentioned. I also mentioned some science stuff here and there (in A to Z mostly).

My guesses:

Dragotha: Well I already read some of the above posts that it was Rath, but I kind of already guessed that based on the posting frequency and pattern.
Influenza: I guess BBP. Something about the humor made me think this.
Sokka: That leaves Jules by process of elimination.

Anyway, thanks for hosting again Tawmis. It was fun.

The MASQ event is nothing without all of you. :)

If the good Lord still has me on this Earth next year, I will reach out to regulars to see if they want to join! More MASQs make guessing more difficult, and thus, more fun.
