Sierra Awards

Post by AndreaDraco »

I've tried a similar topic on Adventure Gamers, but it wasn't very successful: so, maybe this time around I'll be more lucky :)
The concept is to take categories from Emmy Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Academy and so on and adapt them into our genre (and, in this case, our company). Some of this awards have a distinction between Comedy and Drama series. I've seen that it's very difficult to work around these two categories, so I'll substitute them with a generic "Light" (as in comedic, light-hearted, family-oriented) and "Dark" (as in adult, dark themed and serious - which doesn't mean that a "dark" game can't have a comic relief moment or a comedic character or two), which should be more clear.
Oh, and feel free to your own categories!

Now do you want specific games for these - like Leisure Suit Larry 2 (for whatever) or just Leisure Suit Larry?

It's up to you if you want to cite the series as a whole or the single game as a particular stand-out.

Differentiating between light and dark gets iffy with some of these games (especially the King's Quest series) so I'm going with a slightly different route. I started taking cues from the Academy Awards to write up a different list of categories for my awards, but it eventually wound up more like the MTV Movie Awards where I just wanted to honor random things. So here's mine:

CHARACTERS
Best Male Lead: Gabriel Knight
Best Female Lead: Princess Rosella
Best Supporting Male: Boogle (TP)
Best Supporting Female: Grace Nakimura
Best Villain: Sludge Vohaul
Best Supporting Villain: The Boogeyman (KQ7)
Best Sexy Love Interest: Katrina (QFG4)

GAMEPLAY:
Best Puzzle Network: King's Quest 6
Best Puzzle: Sticking a banana in WD-40's exhaust pipe (SQ5)
Best Interface: Leisure Suit Larry 7
Best Maze: The Catacombs (KQ6)
Best Arcade Sequence: Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots (SQ3)
Best Death Sequence: Pushing the down button on the first screen (KQ1)

SOUND
Best Score: King's Quest 6
Best Main Theme: Gabriel Knight 1
Best Background Theme: The Boardwalk (LSL5)
Best Original Song: Girl in the Tower (KQ6)
Best Usage of a Pre-Existing Song: Greensleeves (KQ1)
Best Voice Acting: Tim Curry (GK1)

GAME DESIGN
Best Writing: Gabriel Knight 2
Best Art Direction: King's Quest 6
Best Animation: Torin's Passage
Best Atmosphere: Quest for Glory 4
Best Copyright Protection: Gold Rush
Best Shameless Cameo: Roberta Williams and Rosella (LSL3)
Best Character Costume Change: Sonny Bonds' Pimp Outfit (PQ1)
Best Inventory Item: The Fish (SQ6)
Best Quitting Screen: The Dagger of Amon Ra ("You can't quit! You're fired!")
