Re: There and back again; a Neverending Tale. Neverending Nights
At 1:10-1:15, there's a person (man? woman?) standing by the roadside as Pawl and Andrea/Ruth pass. Is he/she important in some way? I thought he/she/it might ask for alms or somesuch.
Hold on ... Pawl & "Ruth" start arguing whether it's called armourer or smith? OK - armourer is more specific, but "smith" is acceptable - and very vague. What kind of smith? Metalsmith? Coppersmith? Silversmith? Arrowsmith? Ironsmith? Goldsmith Blacksmith? Etc., etc.
Much easier to just have an armourer and a weaponer.
And at 2:38, Pawl says there's an armourer called Thorin Oakenshield? Surely not. He's dead!
Oh dear - Gloin Gimlison (at 2:47)? I think I recognise the name!
Oh god - is he reciting all the dwarf names from The Hobbit? *facedesk*
OK ....... so Grayson is destined to kill another Dragon. Oh, boy. (Not if Peter has naything to do with it, I'm sure).
Fun episode, Tawm! Thanks
=========
Oh dear. I don't wish to know about Grayson's "funk poo".

They're not. Just to show that it's a living world with more people than just our heroes.Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Fri Aug 21, 2020 8:00 am At 1:10-1:15, there's a person (man? woman?) standing by the roadside as Pawl and Andrea/Ruth pass. Indeed. And the first dwarf he mentions is from the Dragonlance novels.Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Fri Aug 21, 2020 8:00 am Hold on ... Pawl & "Ruth" start arguing whether it's called armourer or smith? Aye! A few more to go. Life was both chaotic (for Amiee's health), but also, D&D consumes about 90% of my free (non work) time! Not going to lie.
I do need to get back to this and finish off the last few.

1:25 -- look there! A place to train as a fighter! And even a sign that says "Fighter training"! How convenient.
LOL ... Peter examining his alignment to make sure he's not evil.
Grayson has learned much -- even though he couldn't see anything.
LOL outtakes.
Muuuummmm! DABOO!!! Is that Warcraft 2?
Thanks, Tawm! That was fun.

Indeed, my frustrated "Daboo!" at the end was a reference to Warcraft.Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 10:58 pm 1:25 -- look there! A place to train as a fighter! And even a sign that says "Fighter training"! How convenient.

As for Grayson having learned much - that whole bit is a reference to Star Wars, as well as what the trainer says at the end.
With the blast shield down/your eyes can deceive you.
And the remember your training line is, from if I remember correctly, when Luke decides to go to Cloud City, without completing his training.

Re: There and back again; a Neverending Tale. Neverending Nights
All right -- all the ElfQuest, LORD, Legend of the Red Dragon, Realm of Arkania, and Blade references will go 'woosh' right over my head. Sorry. Dragonlance ones ... I just miiight know them. All the rest? Definitely.
"Do you two always talk this much?"
"Quiet!" Yes, we don't need any more backstory.
Pawl's "I was trained by humans! I don't know the first thing about forging magical swords" just made me *siiigh* -- this is a Tolkien reference, isn't it? And through it, all the way back to Viking sagas. (Yep, that trope is as Old as Dirt. Brokkr the Dwarf and his brother Eitri forged several magical items:
1. Mjolnir, the Hammer of Thor.
2. The golden ring Draupnir, which "multiplied" itself (or "dripped" out) eight times every 9th night. Maybe that's why there are nine Ringwraiths!
3. The golden-bristled boar, Gullinbursti, which had bristles that glowed in the dark.
Brokkr's name, by the way, literally means "the one who works with metal fragments", i.e. "blacksmith". Hey, maybe that's why Tolkien had Narsil broken into fragments!
Sorry, I'm a Norse mythology geek.
Sam the Blacksmith?? This isn't a reference to Samwise Gamgee, is it?
3:50 -- hold on, I thought Pawl didn't know how to forge magical swords. What's he doing fighting the forge?
"Make it so." OK, that was unexpected. But hilarious.
Thanks, Tawm! That was fun.

Somewhere (one of the other threads? I linked about ElfQuest just today or last night)...
One and the same - L.O.R.D. = Legend Of the Red Dragon - which was an old school BBS door game - so if you're not familiar, I am not surprised - as it was before your time on computers, I am sure.
If you're bored - Wiki about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Red_Dragon
Fun note - back in 2005 (when I was originally doing NeN, which started in 2004) - I found and reached out to Seth Able, the designer of "L.O.R.D." and asked if he'd like to do a voice for the show.

One of my all time favorite CRPG games (Blade of Destiny, Star Trail, Shadows Over Riva) by a company called SIR-TECH (who was widely known for THE CRPG that pretty much ruled the CRPG world) - WIZARDRY.
RoA had a very, very, very large influence on me in regards to D&D and DMing. I took a lot of what was in RoA in regards to their gods, and helped shape my own world (which has continued to evolve). But RoA was a large basis for it (because prior to that, it was very, very, very Norse - now it's a mix).
Have you never seen the movie BLADE with Wesley Snipes? Lawd. I highly recommend the first BLADE movie. It's actually pretty good for being a super hero movie before the MCU (Blade is a Marvel character, but the movie came out WAY before the MCU kicked in). I'd avoid the second BLADE and then watch the third BLADE (it's got some humor in it because of Ryan Reynolds).
Neither Tolkien nor Norse intended - more along the lines of us making fun of the "stereotypical" typecast races have in D&D. (We do that throughout the series - even in regards to the quests - "rescue a maiden in distress", "go kill the dragon", "fix the enchanted weapon" tropes).Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 4:40 pm Pawl's "I was trained by humans! Hah. No, we kept saying "Sam" initially to hide the gender of Sam until the reveal to do the whole, "Oh, you're a girl."Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 4:40 pm Sam the Blacksmith?? This isn't a reference to Samwise Gamgee, is it?
That was Sam teaching Pawl how to forge.Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 4:40 pm 3:50 -- hold on, I thought Pawl didn't know how to forge magical swords. What's he doing fighting the forge?
(What they're "attacking" is actually an immobile invisible rat - and they're also rendered immobile as well to ensure they don't dance around - and the rat is then put just behind the forge to give it the appearance they're striking the forge)
I thought it was fun to end it with a Star Trek reference and use the "Mass Heal" spell effect to make it look like the Star Trek beam me down/up thing.Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 4:40 pm "Make it so." OK, that was unexpected. But hilarious.

Yes, I remember that thread. (Strongbow the Elf). But I'd never played ElfQuest (sorry).
Yeah, I'm a young whippersnapper. Hold on, though -- one of the NPCs in LORD is called Seth Able (a bard). Did Seth do a Mary-Sue and name the character after himself?Tawmis wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 9:23 pmOne and the same - L.O.R.D. = Legend Of the Red Dragon - which was an old school BBS door game - so if you're not familiar, I am not surprised - as it was before your time on computers, I am sure.

Heh - I can't tell if you're being sarcastic - because ElfQuest, as said in the other thread, isn't a game, but rather a comic.Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03, 2021 4:23 pm Yes, I remember that thread. (Strongbow the Elf). But I'd never played ElfQuest (sorry).

Yeah. In the original version (back in 2013, I can't recall if I used the Mass Heal - I was toying with spell effects - and saw the Mass Heal one - and thought, "Perfect tie in to the Star Trek line!" this time around... not sure if I thought the same thing back in 2013 too, in the original version of this)Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03, 2021 4:23 pm Ah, cool. (Just checked, I didn't - I used a different spell effect)

Whoops! *blush* No, not sarcastic. I was just trying to go through all the replies here to me before work (earlier this morning ... phew, what a day. If I have another workday like this, please just shoot me). So, pressed for time + bad memory == whoops! Peter, Grayson, Amiee, Ruth and Pawl all arrive at the Forge of Eternal Flame - and now Pawl must forge the Blade of Destiny anew, as he was taught by Sami the Smith. Destiny is unfolding. This is a short episode so it includes some out takes at the end from Episode 61 and 62.
