Hello,
I've been trying to troubleshoot a DOSBox crash that has been occurring, but I'm out of ideas on my own.
I have the King's Quest Collection (1 - 7) from 2006 and I've coped the discs to my hard drive to run on my Windows 10 PC. I've also used the updater from the Sierrahelp website for the 2006 collection.
While playing King's Quest VI, I am not able to examine items that I hold. When I go into my satchel and use the eye on an item, the game freezes and repetitive screeching is heard from my speakers (akin to static at different frequencies which repeats).
DOSBox also displays the following error:
exit to error: DMA segbound wrapping (read)
Any thoughts?
The current setup in my resource.cfg file is as follows:
videoDrv = VGA320.DRV
soundDrv = GENMIDI.DRV
audioDrv = AUDBLAST.DRV
joyDrv = NO
kbdDrv = IBMKBD.DRV
mouseDrv = STDMOUSE.DRV
memoryDrv = ARM.DRV
minHunk = 207k
language = 1
cmd = kq6cd
sync = .\
audio = .\
audioSize = 8K
cd = YES
audio = .\
sync = .\
movieDir = .\seq
patchDir = .\PATCHES
Thanks!

Re: King's Quest VI DOSBox crash
When you say you copied the files over - did YOU copy them over or did you use the Installer, found on this site - which will copy all the stuff correctly?

Re: King's Quest VI DOSBox crash
I copied the files to my hard drive (not sure if it matters, but I copied them to my secondary hard drive which is HDD instead of my primary SSD)
The exact location is D:\Games\Sierra\King's Quest Collection(TM)
Within that folder, I have subfolders:
DOSBox-0.63, kq1sci, kq2, kq3, kq4, kq5, kq6, kq7, manuals
I downloaded the installer "King's Quest Collection DOSBox Update (KQCollectionDBUpdate)" from http://www.sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updat ... dates.html
I successfully ran the installer (needed to select the correct file location since the default wasn't "King's Quest Collection(TM)"
The game runs and I can play it, but the glitch happens when I examine items and also when I die. When I die, it happens at the very end of the scene (when I'm given options to restore, restart, etc.)

Re: King's Quest VI DOSBox crash
I replied last night, but for some reason I don't see my post yet, so I'll repost
I copied all of the files to my secondary hard drive (which is HDD) as opposed to my primary drive (which is SSD).
Then I went to the Sierrahelp website and downloaded the update file for the 2006 collection. I ran the update file without problem for king's quest 1 - 7.
Kings quest 7 doesn't want to work with DOSBox, but it runs fine with SCUMMVM. King's quest 6 doesn't work with SCUMMVM (a resource error is listed), but it does work with DOSBox.
The glitch itself happens only when looking at items I'm carrying, or when I die. If I die, the audio static and error message happen when the "restore, restart, quit" screen is displayed.
I'm happy I can at least play the game, it's just annoying to get the freeze/crash and speaker static.

Heh - it's because you're still new so your posts require admin/moderator approval.
So - the installer SHOULD install it from the CD. So you shouldn't need to manually copy the files. That's probably what's breaking it - one of the resource files isn't compacted correctly. If you use the installer - it should install and copy all the needed files (no CD required for game play).
You should now be set to post without approval.

The required game files from that collection are packed in the InstallShield cab files. Simply copying them over to your hard drive will not extract them. You have to install them first. The patch is for those that have already used the installer on the discs. It is best to use the new installers from here. Go to http://sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updates/N ... ollections and download the King's Quest Collection (2006) new installer. When you run it it will look for the CD in your drive, so install it from your original CD.

Re: King's Quest VI DOSBox crash
Thank you Tawmis and Collector for the explanations and suggestions!
Unfortunately, using the installer on the original CD resulted in the same glitch. I'm thinking that a file/data must be corrupted somewhere...
I even tried installing it on my old Windows 7 laptop and the same glitch happened.
However, I figured out a workaround. Even though the game crashes when I examine items when "speech" is selected, the game doesn't crash if I change speech to text.
In other words, I can play the game with speech, switch to text when interacting with held items, then switch back to speech to continue playing the game.
Not ideal, but at least I don't risk a crash every time I need to use an item on another item!

Wonder if it's what you have set up for audio/speech that's potentially causing the crash?Arcif3r wrote: ↑Thu Feb 04, 2021 7:21 pm Thank you Tawmis and Collector for the explanations and suggestions!

But glad you got a work around going.

It sounds like your RESOURCE.AUD is missing or corrupted. It should be 217,716,879 bytes in size with a MD5 hash of EE3C2EE1994FE61C70F26BACBD34A7C8. Check your CD to make sure there are no scratches or abrasions.
