Issue with Pepper's Adventures in Time Installer

Post by byrdman_2020 »

Hello to the forum:

I had an old account that I can't retrieve so I'm creating a new one.

I can't get Collector's Pepper's Adventures in Time Installer to recognize game files when I try to run them from a directory that has them. If I manually go to DOSBox and run SIERRA.EXE, the game launches, so all appears to be good there. Wondered if he could provide an assist?

Thanks, and let me know what you need from me.

Hello - first, what was your previous account and the email assigned to it? I can update it if you can verify some info.

Second - for the installer, are you running Collector's installer so it's grabbing files from the CD - because it needs to unpack data from the CD. Often times, just doing a copy and paste from data on the CD to a local drive won't work.

Collector can probably provide more info - but there's a DIAGNOSTIC TOOL that you can run and attach the results.

And side note - your posts will require approval - so if you don't see it immediately don't panic. :) (Or no need to post again) ;) Once we're comfortable you're not a spambot, posts will be auto approved. :D

1) Tawmis, I'll PM you details of the old account info.

2) I believe Pepper was floppy only (could be mistaken of course). The installer indicated it was floppy only.

3). Let met try those advanced instructions for using the Disk1, Disk2 individual folders. I wasn't aware of that being a requirement (I had ran some installers like KQ5 floppy in a similar method as I'm doing for Pepper, where I copy all the files to a folder and run the installer in that same said folder). I'll give that a try and update.

4) Apologies as well on the approval process. My bad if that caused you guys any grief :)

Great site and forum and community. I'll report back when I get a chance to t'shoot.

Ah ha... evidently I can't PM yet.

Old username was "ozymanhattan". I don't know what email it was associated with, I tried a couple variants, no luck in finding it in the database. If you can find it on the backend, feel free to PM me or something if that's possible.

OK, follow up.... I've created a root folder (PepperDOS) and created 5 folders underneath (labeled 1-5) and copied the files from each disk that I made ages ago into each folder. The PepperForDOSBox.exe is in the PepperDOS folder along with the 5 subfolders. Running the EXE gives me the same error (files from the PAIT original install disks are required to install. See screenshot below. Am I doing this right?

The email addresses are pretty close - different @ part - and no number.

So I updated ozymanhattan to have that email address. So you can recover the account. :)

Make sure you maintain the director structure of the diskettes in each of the numbered folders, i.e. in "1" you should see the three directories that were on the disk, "BOTH", "DOSONLY", and "WINONLY".

Thank you Tawmis... old account reactivated. FYI, it took a very long time to get the email from the system. Not sure if that's normal (if so, cool deal, but reporting in case that's not).

Collector, my folder structure has a BOTH, DOSONLY, WINONLY on Disk 1... the other 4 disks have just a BOTH folder along with various files (like a VERSION and RESOURCE.000). Is that normal for this game? Regardless, I get the same error.

So when I look at my Disks - I see:
DISK 1:
BOTH (DIR)
DISK1
DOSONLY (DIR)
INSTALL.BAT
INSTALL.EX$
INSTALL.INI
INSTALL.INS
PEPPER.BMP
SETUP.EXE
SIERRA.BMP
WINONLY (DIR)

DISK 2:
BOTH (DIR)
DISK2
VERSION

DISK 3:
BOTH (DIR)
DISK3
VERSION

DISK 4:
BOTH (DIR)
DISK4
VERSION

DISK 5:
BOTH (DIR)
DCOMPAUD.EXE
DISK5
INSTALL.BAT
VERSION
As far as I know my disks aren't messed up - so are you seeing something similar, ozymanhattan?

I ask because Disk 5 has a few extra things in it.

Extract this into the same folder as the installer and run it. Attach the generated log in this thread.

Tawm does not list the contents of his DOSONLY directory, which is the folder in question. Looks like you are missing more than half of your driver files. A lot of the missing drivers are not needed in DOSBox, Even if it had installed you would have errored out and not started or if it started you would have had no audio. Nor would you have had the right driver for you keyboard. I am curious about this copy you have. Could this have been a bonus copy included with a new PS1 computer? Open the BOTH\VERSION file in Notepad and let me know what the game's version is.

Here are the missing files missing that DOSBox can use. Extract them into the DOSONLY directory in folder 1.

Try this one. Let it overwrite any of the previous drivers.
