KQ6 Windows Ver on Virtual PC

Post by Nevac »

Since I'm running Vista 64 I installed KQ6 on Windows 98 on Virtual PC and although it installed and runs. For some reason the speech is fine but the music/sound is terrible compared to the dos version is there something else I need to do? I've installed and run several other games in VPC and they work fine.

That seems to be the nature of VPC. The MIDI is far inferior to that of DOSBox. This is why I don't use VPC for gaming. I wish that VPC just had a MIDI pass through and let the host OS deal with the MIDI. It may be a while, but the best solution for KQ6 may be to wait for ScummVM to support the Windows version of KQ6.

Ah so the problem is with VPC emulating the midi? Thanks for that guess I'll have to try something else maybe get a machine that runs Win9X natively or dual boot the thing.

I heard that they are testing SCI with SCUMMVM but every time I've downloaded the latest snapshot/release it won't let me add any SCI games in the menu with them it says it can't find any games in the folders I select, even though they are SCI games.

You will have to wait until the 1.0 release. Unsupported engines have been temporarily disabled. Then you will need to get a subversion build to have it recognize SCI games. Don't look for KQ6 to be supported for a while, yet. By the way, KQ6 works natively with Vista 32.

Because SCI implementation isn't complete yet the engine is disabled by default. If you want to add it in you have to compile the source yourself.

It does not work in XP 32 without some work. The SHP installer for KQ6 will detect the version of Windows that it is being installed on and will set it up accordingly.

Ah thanks again you're a real lifesaver Collector, I really appreciate the help you're giving me. The installer did the trick and it's running perfectly although is there anyway to full screen the game or am I stuck with it windowed?

You can try to set it to run in 640x480 resolution with Compatibility mode.

Ah after a lot of messing around I finally got KQ6 Windows version working on Vista 64. I just followed the directions you had listed here

http://www.sierrahelp.com/Utilities/Emu ... OSBox.html

I pretty much just installed Windows 3.11 under DOSBox 0.73 and added the sound blaster and vga drivers and now I can fullscreen the game. Works with sound and speech.
