Space Quest V Play Through.

In Space No One Can Hear You Clean, er, Scream. But if you post in this forum about Space Quest - someone's sure to hear you. I think. Try it, anyway!

Space Quest V Play Through.

Post by Tawmis »

Non Commentary SQ4 is still uploading - and still need to record commentary of it.

In the meantime, SQ5 is queued up and ready to roll.

Here's two screen shots to warm up the thread, that I made. :D

When I finish SQ5 - I'll post that stuff in this thread.

Ta-da! :D It's the Space Quest/Star Trek mash-up!

Does the second screenshot read "Space Quest V: The Next Sanitation"? *curious*

Mutation.

The Next Mutation is the title of SQV.

Oh, right. Not enough sleep and no coffee makes Rath a dull SHP member.

In my defence, "sanitation" has the same number of syllables as "Generation". (Plus, it seems more appropriate for Roger) ;)

I understand the lack of sleep.

(Went to bed last night at 3am, got up at 6am, and ran a D&D session remotely for 3 hours) :D

Sheesh! *hands Tawm the LSL2-style Self-Filling Big Gulp full of coffee/tea/hot chocolate/whatever caffeine-based drink you'd like!* ;)

I can survive on 5-6 hours of sleep, but I'd prefer to get my full 8 hours if-and-when I can. Trouble is, one of my neighbours sometimes starts playing the bongo drums at 7 am ... even on the weekend. (WTF?)

Would be nice to know who this person is, but since I live in a flat, it could be anyone. Bleh. :P

Haven't gotten far in Space Quest V... but it definitely does already feel different than the previous games.

Hah! I forgot this game had a form of copy protection for the manual. Made myself a cheat sheet. :D

Yes, Roger Wilco! Let's proudly count how many times the Academy uses the word "proud" in three paragraphs! :D (Actually, only twice). ;)

[insert Chief Commanding Officer's name here.] =P

Heh ... Commodore LXIV. LXIV, in Roman numerals, is "64". :)

I'm sure all these names are hidden jokes of some kind. "Ku" is probably Q, from James Bond. :)

The names "Peeyu", Spittonie", "Klorox II" and "Gingivitis" are pretty obvious.

On the other hand ... "Thrakus"? "Lukaszuk II"? "Monostadt"? "Gangularis"? Not sure what those are. Do any of these ring a bell?

The coordinates to Klorox II is a joke, I am sure. 90210 - the TV show.
And the Space Bar is a dirty joke 69869 - 69 ate 69. As in 69 the sexual position.
Monostadt is probably a reference to Monistat, which is a female tampon brand.

The only reference to "Thrak" I know is an album released by King Crimson in 1995. But Space Quest 5 came out in 1993.

Tawmis left off the actual planet name for the abbreviation KU in his list: KU = Kiz Urazgubi

And Monostadt VII = Monistat 7, a 7-day medicine for female yeast-infections

Guesses:

Thrakus = likely a play on the planet name "Arrakis" from the Dune series ("Arrakis" is even mentioned on a postcard at Fester Blatz's store in SQ3)

Spittoonie = likely a play on the planet name "Tatooine" from the Star Wars series

Lukaszuk = Lucas suck(s) ? Possibly a reference to the rivalry between Sierra and LucasArts?

Take a step back, son! I didn't!
The GAME did!

Because when Roger first gets the ship - Flo tells you the three places you need to go.
One of them she simply calls "KU" - not Kiz Urazgubi.
So when I looked that the horoscope page with all of these things; my eyes scanned for "Kiz"
And not seeing it, I flipped through the rest of the manual thinking, it's one of those that looks to be scribbled on a corner page.
But no.
So I go back and go to each planet on the horoscope page thingie.
I see Kiz Urazgubi, and it STILL doesn't don on me.
It was not till I began doing the screenshot cheat sheet you see up there - that it donned on me that "Kiz Urazgubi" was "KU" which is why I left it as "KU" since that's what Flo called it. :D

Hmm ... I just tried re-reading the "KU" planet name again, syllable by syllable ... and ... geez.

Kiz Urazgubi = "Kiss Your @$$ Goodbye".

The Two Dudes didn't pull any punches, did they. ;)

Fair enough. It was only in the manual, not in game, IIRC. The manual has both the name and the abbreviation; I just happened to put both my DOS game code list all those years ago.

(Sierra was probably worried about young, impressionable tykes reading that naughty phrase in the game, so they just changed it to KU.)

Yup - and foreshadowing - because this is where the female terminator shows up.
