Phantasmagoria 1 Play Through.

Post by Tawmis »

So I think I am going to do Phantasmagoria 1 as my next playthrough now that I am done with Manhunter.

Talking about it again in the Who/What Am I? thread got me itching to play it.

Oh cool - I hadn't realized that!

Phantasmagoria 1, I _think_ I can probably do most of with my eyes closed (I've replayed it several times), Phantasmagoria 2 I think I've replayed maybe four or five times, and that was a long time ago.

I forget how moving through the house is jarring because of the camera angels sometimes. But, now that I am all caught up on my D&D notes, I came back to this - and just got to Chapter 3.
Definitely still love this game.

Finished Phantasmagoria.

Forgot that once the "chase" starts - there's no way to restore to a previous save since it only keeps one save - and once the chase starts - that becomes the save/load point. I remembered there was more to see and do before I triggered the chase - so I had to do some wonky stuff to get around that.

I remember this bugging me the first time I played. I wanted to explore the house a little more, but then got locked into the chase.

Just rename the file it creates called CHASE.DAT and/or CHASEDUN.x

I replayed as a new game, and got stuck with the chase again - different area. And then opened the directory - noticed those two files had recently been created. Renamed them. And suddenly I could access the save game.

Wish I'd thought of that the first time.

So I technically played through the game 1-6, into 7. Started chase.
Started a new game, went 1-6, started chase. Renamed file.
Explored as I wanted.

What is the file size of those? If all it is doing is looking for them and disabling the save system then it seems like it might not be that hard to disable it. Comment out the part of script that creates them SCI Companion might not be able to work with SCI32 graphics, but I think it should be able to decompile the scripts.

Small.

CHASEDUN.4 = 1KB
CHASE.DAT =1KB
CHASEDUN.2 = 1KB

The # after the CHASEDUN.x I assume is from whatever profile is playing.

I assume that the content is only to ID the player at that point.

Non Commentary version (as of the posting, it's still rendering the HD version on Youtube and has been for awhile... probably because it's almost 5 hours long!)

As of this posting - it's still processing the HD stuff (which will take awhile, I am sure) - because Phantasmagoria relies so much on dialogue - I didn't have a good way to "speed up" the game like I normally do...
So what I did was something a little different - did the commentary to come out in the left speaker, while the game play audio is lowered and in the right. So you can kind of hear some of the dialogue I comment about.
I did make a version where I sped up the portions I didn't have comments (that's uploading now) - but that only trimmed about an hour off the video.
I am also doing a version where I release each chapter as a stand alone video, since there's 7 chapters - and that'd make each one about 30 minutes to watch.

Anyway, here's the full longplay commentary...
