I've mentioned ElfQuest quite a few times on here.
So what makes ElfQuest so special?
Well, first - it's a fantasy story. As you can guess, by the title the main focus is "Elves."
But this isn't your... Lord of the Rings kind of Elves.
The Elves of ElfQuest are different - still pointed ears and such.
But ... different too. I don't want to spoil too much.
The amazing thing - aside from Wendy's art, which back in the late 70's - an INDIE comic coming out during a time dominated by MARVEL and DC - and an INDIE comic that was drawn and written by a FEMALE?
Freaking unheard of.
Wendy's art is amazing (especially in the Original Quest - it starts beautiful - but when these originally came out - it was 3 months between issues - and while I loved her art from the start - by the time you hit issue 15, 16, and 17 - you can tell she's grown SO much as an artist and this remains some of my favorite art in comics).
Next - the characters.
The characters are incredible.
Each one is there - FOR A REASON.
There's no "fluff" characters.
Each of them has a VERY unique personality. Each of them feels very real.
And Wendy drew them so they were all easily identifiable from one another.
You WILL cry. You WILL laugh. You WILL fall in love with at least one of them.
At least.
Anyway, hopefully that captures your interest...
I had an old thread on here, how to read ElfQuest comics. But over the years, the site was redesigned so those links don't work (back in 2009!)
But WaRP Graphics, folks who make ElfQuest, still offer to allow people to read it on their site for free.
The main page is here.
But for your benefit, I will tell you what's worth reading that captured my heart and interest.
First, there's the first 20 issues of the Original Quest.

If you enjoyed the first twenty of the original quest - I'd recommend what comes next.
Siege at Blue Mountain
The problem is the Original Quest is some of my favorite comic story and art - ever. So it's difficult to come close to that, ever again.
In Siege, I like the story - because it's a progression from the original.
Wendy's art has changed by the time this comes out - still good, but my favorite was OQ 15-20.
I like the art in Siege, it's just not what I was used to.

Next in the story, also good, like Siege -

After this, other writers were employed to write ElfQuest...
And the result is a mix bag.
For example, a good example (though the art tends to be rough) - our own Sierra Christy Marx had a hand in writing "Wolfrider" - http://elfquest.com/read/index.php?s=WR&p=0
But the Searcher and the Sword is all right -

This is pretty cool. About how Marvel and DC turned down Wendy and Richard Pini, and how the Pinis turned it around.
