Resurrecting since I am setting up GK3 - a CDROM does need to be plugged in, but no CD is actually required. It just needs to see a CDROM drive.

Just did it to my laptop. Plugged in the USB CDROM, and now it plays...

But there's another issue - I will make a thread for it.
