Quest for Glory

Hey! I'm just wondering about using Quest for Glory in DOSBox. I have Shadows of Darkness installed from a separate CD (I used the help topic from Collector), but I want to use the others. I have the QfG Collection CD (the one that included the demo for number 5). Will I need to install I-III through DOSBox? If so how do I do that? Or do I install them from Windows and just play them in DOSBox. Please help! :(

Install the DOS version of the games (if they have it). Then when that's all done, launch DOSBox, mount the drive (for example, mount c:\sierra\qfg as c:\sierra or whatever), then go into the directory and launch it through DOSBox. :D

For sound/music, ye may need to mount the CD/DVD ROM as well. (I usually do anyway, regardless).

Quest for Glory!!!! WOOOO!!!!

You'll love DOS Box with Quest for Glory. You'll notice that all the problems (sound and timing problems) will all go away with the glories of Dos Box.

DOS Box is a savior.... Namely, no longer any problems with... ERROR 52!

To play the games in the ideal environment, first apply the NewRisingSun patches, though. Download, unzip patch into default directory for the respective game, and many of the problems will be solved.

Do this before you start playing, though, as you will probably not be able to load save games from the unpatched versions of the game.

And yes, play in DOSBox even after having the patches.

I have always loved QfG4 best of all the QfG games (although they're all wonderful), and I was lucky enough to play on a machine that wasn't fast enough to set Error 52 into motion. By the time I got a faster machine, people were using Turbo or Moslo or other similar slowdown programmes, but I just used my old computer for QfG4. And then...

... and then... came... DOSBox and the NewRisingSun patches.

You know, for the first time in YEARS I was able to defeat the Weapons Master in QfG1. The timer bug - gone. I could even converse with Erasmus in between tea-sipping without feeling as though I were in a race game testing my reflexes!

OK I need some more help. I got the games installed and they play perfectly fine in DOSBox. I installed NewRisingSun's patches too. My question is how would I create a shortcut on the desktop that will start up DOSBox and go directly to the game (similar to the end product of "Getting Quest for Glory IV to run in DOSBox)?

Make a shortcut to DOSBox. Right click on it and choose "Properties". After the path to DOSBox, add the path to the config file that you want to use with the game. The game can be launched either from the [autoexec] section of the config file or add in the path to the executable in this same shortcut. You can also add other parameters to it get it exit DOSBox when the game exits and not open the console window, too. Adding:

C:\Sierra\QGANTH\QG2\SCIV.EXE -conf C:\Sierra\QGANTH\QG2\dosbox.conf -noconsole -exit

will start the game in DOSBox, using a dosbox.conf in the game's folder without the console window and will exit DOSBox when you quit the game. Be sure to change paths to match yours, if different. Remember to enclose any paths with spaces in quotes. Also, put a dosbox.conf file in the game's folder.

Dr. Cranium makes a good avatar for him... *imagines Collector's posts with the voice of Dr. Cranium.* Makes sense. Intelligent. :)
