Is the game being a ROYAL pain? Need a hint? Got a problem? This is the place to discuss King's Quest!

Roberta Williams Anthology Installer.

Post by Tawmis »

So I downloaded it - ran it - got through CD1 fine. Got to what I believe was the end of CD2 where it asked if I want to rip the music files for one of the games in OGG, FLAC or MIDI. I selected FLAC. And then it closed down. Don't see it ripping and never reopened to proceed to disk 3 and 4.

EDIT: Tried OGG format, same thing happened.
EDIT: Tried MIDI, same thing.

I did notice, for some reason it's failing on RESOURCE.AUD for KQ6. (Just says "Copy Failed" and moves on to the next thing)

I thought I'd be clever, thinking maybe that's why the installer tanks and copied my RESOURCE.AUD from my normal KQ6 game.

Same result, however.

When it closes, there's no error or anything. The window just disappears.

SIDE Note: It got the Apple II emulation working though, and that's what I was really going for.

Sounds like there is a defect with the disc. Check the disc for smudges, abrasions or scratches. If you have a virtual CD drive installed the ripper can fail. It is only rips and compresses "Girl in the Tower" for the end. If it does not find it, the game will use MIDI.

I will note that I have not tried most of the installers on Windows 10 or 11. If I get time I'll try it tomorrow on my Win11.

My main machine is Windows 11.

I do have a Windows 8 laptop I can try it on after work tonight. The CDs are pretty beat up, but I was able to make .ISO files of the discs - except disc 2, probably because the audio - so it did the whole .BIN and .CUE thing.

May see about burning it to new discs and see if that also helps.

I believe it may be a Windows 11 issue.

So I had .ISO of Disks 1, 3 and 4 and .CUE/.BIN of Disk 2. So I was able to burn the images onto new CDs since my copy is pretty beaten up.

Windows 11 - All the files were successfully copying then on Disk 2 - right after selecting OGG/FLAC or MIDI it just closes.

On my Windows 8 laptop - all files copied, and I selected FLAC, did it's thing, then asked for Disk 3 and proceeded.

So, it seems to be Windows 11 (or perhaps something specific to my machine).

Wondering if whatever program you're using to get FLAC, OGG or MIDI perhaps doesn't work with Windows 11 and just tanks out?

I doubt that the encoders are the problem. The encoding is a separate process than the ripping. If the track doesn't get ripped there is no file to encode. I just tried it on my Win11 machine and a different problem was revealed. The plugin for the messagebox that gives the user the option of which compression codec to use is broken. It fails to execute any code inside of its if statement. If I put the ripping/encoding script outside of it, it works flawlessly. The plugin had been depreciated before, but now seems to not work at all. I'll need to find another option than this old plugin.

Pardon, but that's what I was saying. :) That message box appears to select one - then nothing happens after selecting one. The installer, for me, on Windows 11, simply closes.

Windows 8, it appears to work (it proceeds on with the other files, then goes on to Disc 3 and then Disc 4). Not checked to see if the songs were actually ripped - but it definitely continued.

No, on my Win11 the message box does not even appear. For a stopgap measure I guess I could just make two installers, one for FLAC and one for OGG. The selection of which codec to be used would be made by selecting which installer to download.

A custom messagebox in C# would be extremely easy and quick, but NSIS relies on the Windows dialog API rather than its own program and requires a plugin to modify.

Ah, weird. Mine does at least appear in Windows 11. It's just selecting anything, just closes the whole thing out, no error.
Flawless on Windows 8 laptop though. Everything installed.
Ironically, though it failed on Windows 11, it DID install the Apple Games and made it so they launch on Windows 11.
On Windows 8, however, where the whole thing was successfully - it fails to open with an error message of "Unable to open the file ][" - so I am guessing if I renamed and fixed the shortcut to point to "AppleII" instead of "Apple ][" it'd work. Not tested that theory yet, because it works on my Windows 11 machine where I planned to play these anyway. :D

The last time that I ran the installer was probably on one of my old Win7 machines. It, of course, worked then.
