DOSBox Installer for Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers

Post by Collector »

I have made a replacement installer for GK1. I have two versions, one with and one without a PDF of the graphic novel. From the README:

This installer is provided free with no guarantee, what so ever. It merely provides a Windows shortcut, config files and icons to allow your copy of Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers to run automatically in DOSBox. It also includes the NewRisingSun timer patch for GK1CD. It will install DOSBox 0.72. DOSBox can be updated simply by installing newer versions in the same location as the old. Also included is a PDF of the Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers graphic novel. Acrobat Reader must be installed to view it. It can be downloaded from:

http://www.adobe.com/go/gntray_dl_get_reader

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers for Windows is not playable on modern Windows. Windows Xp and Vista do not have DOS, buit instead have an imperfect DOS emulator, which has very flawed sound emulation. Enrico Rolfi (Endroz) developed a new Windows installer with patches for the Gabriel Knight bugs. It fixes most problems with GK1 under XP, including the nasty save/restore bug under Windows XP, but relies on the Windows version. This makes it impossible to play on some versions of Windows. If you have 64 bit version of Windows, you MUST run the DOS version in DOSBox, since the Windows version of the game will not play (no 16 bit code will run natively in x64 Windows.) Some Vista users will have issues with the full screen that Endroz uses with his installer.

Many feel intimidated with DOSBox. While it is reletivly easy to use and there is help, such as various guides and frontends, this installer greatly simplifies the process. No configuration is needed. Just copy the contents of your Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers CD to a temporary folder on your harddrive. Unzip new installer into this folder, overwriting the original SETUP.EXE, RESOURCE.CFG and any files in the PATCHES folder. You can then install from this folder or burn the contents to a new CD and install from the Autorun.

Get it Here: With Graphic Novel (7.8M) and Without Graphic Novel (1.7M)

Please try it out and let me know if there are any issues. If all goes well and there is any demand, I might make new DOSBox installers for some of the other Sierra games.

Is there no interest in new DOSBox installers for Sierra games? I have one for QfG4, now. With this one you only need to insert the CD and run the installer.

I have a huge interest. Because what I do is unzip them onto my External Drive... and save'em all there. :)

It's just GK1 requires the CD to run - and at this moment, all of my Sierra games are packed away in red boxes in my closet. So I'd have to dig it out to test this one. But I have already saved the file to my external drive (with the PDF).

Here is the link for the QfG4 installer. As I said, all you have to do is insert your CD and run the installer. These new installers are not as restrictive as my collection patches. You can install them where you want. I am becoming a little more versed in the NSIS scripting language, so they will all be more flexible than my patches were. Eventually I will redo my patches, too.

 Yes! Lots of interest. Excuse my naivety and not getting a chance to play Sierra games for a while but will this take care of the dreaded Error 52?

The installer includes the NRS patches as well as setting it up to run in DOSBox, both of which solves the timer bombs in the game.
