This guy's speed run...
...
I am in awe. I only watched his QFG1 so far... but it's insane.
He literally beats the first game in less than 5 minutes.

Re: This guy's speed run...
Speedruns like this are pretty cool. Though I'm not sure how he did QFG5. He jumps right to the end somehow. He mentions a hacked save game, which I don't think should be allowed (and he does call it questionable). I'm somewhat amazed at how much interest there is to doing Sierra games. KQ1 can be beaten in less than a minute. I think the strangest one that I've found is for Mask of Eternity. Why would anyone subject themselves to that game... repeatedly... to figure out all the tips and exploits just to get the fastest run?

Yeah I didn't make it past the QFG1 run. I don't know how he beat the troll so quickly.notbobsmith wrote: ↑Tue Jul 02, 2024 12:06 amSpeedruns like this are pretty cool. I noticed he started the weapon at like 165? Was that possible in QFG1? Why do I think the max is 100? I could be wrong.
But yes, hacking the game should invalidate a "speed run" attempt.

His strength is at 2010 too! The other speedruns I've seen may exploit something in the game (like the poker money thing I mentioned in PQ1), but this looks like an edited file, unless there is some sort of exploit that they don't mention. I couldn't find a breakdown for the VGA remake, but the EGA can be done in 56 seconds according to a comment in this video.

Yes. Also, his QFG1 dodge and stealth are 128. So, of course he beats the game very quickly.notbobsmith wrote: ↑Wed Jul 03, 2024 12:39 am His strength is at 2010 too! Tawm is right, the highest the stats can get is 100.
This guy obviously hacked the game. This speedrun should not be allowed. That's like showing up to a D&D game where the others are all first-level ... and you have a 21st-level character.
This is not the point of playing a game. This guy can do us all a favour and, politely speaking, go away.
As for the QfG speedrunners -- interesting! They're not using any hacks, or giving themselves unreasonable stats, but pushing themselves against the game. Nicely done!

Re: This guy's speed run...
I found another speedrun of the entire series and found out how to skip to the end in QFG5. Apparently, the assassin is constantly hiding behind the town gate, but can't be seen. You can kill him with the Frostbite spell which forces the game almost to the very end. I'm not sure why the game was coded this way, but I find stuff like this fascinating. Speedrunners almost reverse engineer games to figure out how to get the best time. It's amazing what they learn. I am curious as to who first figured this out in QFG5. I hope OneShortEye does a video on this someday.

See, when it's legit, then it's interesting.

True. If it's legit, I'm not complaining. It's only when people hack the games to give themselves ridiculously high stats ... well. Of course you'll win, but there's no challenge.
I can understand doing the "ridiculously high stats" thing, but only on one condition: if you win the game first, fair and square, and you want to see what you've missed. Then that's OK.

Agreed - but at that point, you're not really speed running. You're just looking to explore and look for things you missed (which is the opposite of speed running)Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Fri Jul 05, 2024 8:34 am I can understand doing the "ridiculously high stats" thing, but only on one condition: if you win the game first, fair and square, and you want to see what you've missed. Re: This guy's speed run...
Hmm - but what if you're doing a speed run, and you give yourself ridiculously high stats, just in case you get caught by a monster and need to beat it as quickly as you can, so you can carry on with your speed run?Tawmis wrote: ↑Fri Jul 05, 2024 5:39 pmAgreed - but at that point, you're not really speed running. Honestly, I don't understand the point of a speed run, other than bragging rights. "Ha ha, nyah nyah, I beat it faster than you!" *pppphhhhbbbtttt!* Seems kinda childish. *shrug* Takes all sorts, I guess, but when I play a Sierra game, I prefer to take my time, explore the game world, get to know what I'm doing, maybe experience a death scene or sixteen, etc.
Running through the game to get to the end seems a bit ... pointless. (Sorry for the wordplay).

Re: This guy's speed run...
It's a different way of experiencing a game. In a way, it's not too different from playing a Sierra game and trying to get every point. Or completing every side quest in a RPG. Or grinding to get that special weapon. You don't need any of these things to complete the game. And like I said, speedrunners almost reverse engineer games to optimize their times and learn a lot about how the game is put together in the process. Taking your time to experience a game is great, but once you've finished that...Rath Darkblade wrote: ↑Sat Jul 06, 2024 3:20 amHmm - but what if you're doing a speed run, and you give yourself ridiculously high stats, just in case you get caught by a monster and need to beat it as quickly as you can, so you can carry on with your speed run?Tawmis wrote: ↑Fri Jul 05, 2024 5:39 pmAgreed - but at that point, you're not really speed running.
