Thanks for the info & links.
Heard it a little (from your links), dosen't really compare to the MT-32 at all.
Even though the MT-32 is a low end version of the D-50, then the CSM-1 surely is an even lower end of the MT-32.

Yeah!
Have an oldschool system (386er and 486er) to play the old games and have connected an MT-32 to that system.
Had an external Soundblaster Midi modul at that time but that is nothing compared to the MT-32.
Love that sound machine :-)

Because of this stupid picture:

I went and bought an MT-32 on eBay last night :)

So I too will get to hear what the Sierra games are "supposed" to sound like.
Though I've had the D-50 and later synths from Roland, I'm not expecting much at all, but still better than Soundblaster MIDI as you say:)

Last week I bought an AMD 80386 40MHz (would have prefered Intel) and a little Pentium 166MHz computers.
I don't think I want a 14" CRT monitor though, I prefer the newer flat screens.

Is it complete now?
I've never played Phantasmagoria (yet) but have 1 or 2 of them so far in my modest collection.

Ooh I'd love to play that now that I'm Nihongo benkyo shimasu. The big katakana say "fa-n-ta-zu-mu".

Ohhh... Japanese release of Phantasmagoria 1 arrived today :-)
Funny that they renamed/ shorten both titles to Phantasm instead of Phantasmagoria..

I am happy that I found this gem:

Japanese release (PC88/98) of HI-RES ADVENTURE #3: Cranston Manor

It looks pretty much like the original U.S. release.
Funny thing: it´s on two disks instead of one.

John Williams on FB:
"If I remember, the 9801 operating system was a bit of pig and piece of it had to reside on the game diskettes. (And we had to pay them a royalty for their trouble.)"
and
"Japan was a much smaller market, but very loyal and just genuinely friendly to deal with. Even in the very early 80's, when Ken and Berta went to Tokyo they were treated like minor rock stars. The Japanese game creators were very innovative in their own way and very open and honest about what worked and didn't in their market.
The operation wasn't incredibly profitable, but it had other benefits. It's kind of forgotten now, but back in the 1980's the Japanese had perfected things like just-in-time manufacturing that were just really taking root in the US, and they had some insights into how to put together productive creative teams that went against everything industrial America had been up to at the time but that gave individual team members greater latitude to make a difference. Each time we left the country, it was like we had been taken back to school a few weeks to learn something big and new.
We eventually opened up an operation in Japan (Sierra Japan KK) which was actually a joint venture with Pioneer, Inc. and it yielded a more profitable business for us while helping us better understand how to work internationally. It was all good.

It should be known by now that I like Japanese releases of Sierra games too
Here is another rare one: HI-RES ADVENTURE #2: The Wizard and the Princess
(Japanese PC88/98 verrsion released 1983 by STARCRAFT)

Interesting:
"It is unique to the other versions as it has completely redrawn and original art for each the screens, in a higher resolution. The text was updated into Japanese, but it is unclear if it was modified, changed or improved. Although according to some reviews it may be suggested the peasant woman (village aunt?) was turned into a 'village daughter' (of 'mountain farmers'), the giant has been changed (this may be regards its size and scale next to the tree, in which the giant in the original game would appear to be much larger), and 'magus Harlin' is apparently a 'witch'."
