I take it that the Jones is a replacement for one that you sold. How about the diskette version?

No, I never had this one. I also still have the floppy version because it was the only copy of the game I had (unlike all the King's Quests and such which I had in CD-ROM collections - those all went but I'm gradually recovering those also). The only things I really lost and will probably never get back are the On-Line Systems, SierraVenture and SierraVision titles.

If someone wants to gift me The Black Cauldron to replace mine (no idea what ever happened to it), I'd gladly take it! :D

Some more acquisitions. 3D Ultra Radio Control Racers Deluxe was the one I was actually aiming for. That leaves just one more title (3D Ultra Traintown Deluxe, US release) to complete the 3-D Ultra series in my collection. The seller also had a sealed Nascar which I grabbed along with it.

I ordered the NES adaptation of KQ5 on eBay. Here it is! I've dumped it to a ROM file for examination. I've also been working on a decompilation of KQ5CD.

I will never forgive myself for giving my KQ5 NES to - I believe - my nephew to play. :)

Because I never got it back! lol

Congrats on acquiring it!

Great! Is it even SCI? I would think not. Be interesting to see the results of the dump.

I seriously doubt it's SCI any more than KQ1SMS is AGI. Just recreated from scratch.

That is what I would assume. But didn't Eric say he was going to look for additional strings in it?

Yeah - from what I remember - it's very wonky looking in regards to color. Lots of orange.

EDIT - Found a play through of it.

I do know that several strings were changed, obviously due to Nintendo's policies at the time.

There was even at least an actual message for when Graham climbs the rope attached to the tree branch. In the PC version, the death message was the generic "Thanks for playing King's Quest V." In the NES version, however, it gives the new message "The branch was not the best choice..."

Instead of Mordack force-choking Graham, he just burns Graham up.

Interestingly, the game has two save files, but no actual save feature (the files are lost when you turn off the NES); actual saving is done through VERY long passwords (not as bad as Famicom Maniac Mansion, thankfully). NES Maniac Mansion had a battery save, even if you were limited to one file.

Bought this for $6.00 CAD at a local thrift store (not even a chain). The box is empty it's just the jewel case floating around in there. But that's okay. For that price and the fact that it'll still look great on the shelf, I'm happy.
