Well, a lot of the so-called "science" in comics is hardly realistic since it relies more on the "rule of cool" trope than anything else.

I mean, look at the heroes listed above: Peter Parker is bitten by a radioactive spider and gets spider powers, Bruce Banner is bombarded with gamma rays and becomes the Hulk, Steve Rogers gets a top secret super soldier serum (in the 1940s no less) that turns his scrawny frame into a muscle-bound superhero, and as we've noted, Tony Stark has a source of potentially unlimited energy stuck in his chest and suits that operate on tech that's impossible in the real world.

In the real world, Bruce Banner would be dead due to all that radiation, Peter Parker would be dead or nothing would've happened at all (maybe cancer later on), and Steven Rogers would've also been dead or nothing would've happened. Tony Stark would certainly be dead. In no scenario does anyone get super powers or have the technology to create an arc reactor and sci-fi power suits.

BTW... Stark does have surgery performed and the arc reactor removed at the end of Iron Man 3. That said, the arc reactor saves him from Loki's mind control in Avengers right before the Battle of New York, so that was a useful — but unexpected — side effect of having it embedded in his chest.

Just wondering: how much radiation is Bruce Banner subjected to? *curious* I know that the word 'radiation' gets thrown around a lot by people who don't know what they're talking about, like politicians and newsreaders and environmental activists, and they all say the same thing: that if you get exposed to even the tiniest bit of radiation, you'll get horribly sick or die a horrible death.

In reality, people get exposed to radiation all the time - from the sun, from a microwave, from your TV and so on. Even eating a banana gives you a tiny, tiny bit of radiation. Like anything, it depends on the dose - how much of it you get. The wiki-link includes a diagram that shows how much radiation you'd get from various sources, as well as how much would do what to you. (Predictably, eating a banana is harmless).

Peter Parker's radioactive spider might be plausible. Again, I'm wondering: how did the spider become radioactive? How much radioactive material (and what kind) was it coated with? What kind of spider was it, and what kind of venom did it carry? Did Peter get anti-venom afterwards? If we knew that, we'd know what'd happen to Peter in real life. (Of course he wouldn't become Spider-Man, though).

Bruce Banner is noted, being miles from Ground Zero - but is clearly bathed in the "mysterious" Gamma Radiation.
For Spider-Man/Peter Parker, the Spider ends up between something emitting radiation and bites Peter, shortly after.
The type of spider is not noted (not sure if it ever came up after). But I thought it was weird that Peter wondered why it burned. I assume he means more than normal, like when you get a shot and you can feel it coursing in your veins (like a tetanus shot). But he also notes the spider is glowing (from the radiation exposure).It's this bite into Peter's bloodstream that "alters" some of his DNA (to give him his "Spider Sense", strength, dexterity, and wall crawling).

Why do you have the same panel posted twice for the Hulk? I know they're colored differently, but otherwise it's exactly the same.

I'd add Superman and maybe Wolverine to that list of instantly recognizable super heroes.

I already mentioned Superman, but good point about Wolverine. I'd forgotten how popular he's become, especially since the movies.

But yeah, even before the movies I knew about Wolverine and Spiderman as Marvel heroes. And I was not a big comic book person. I did not, however, realize that he is canonically supposed to be quite short until years after the movies.

I've been off and on all day, the last post I saw from you (in this thread) was the one directly before the images (http://sierrahelp.com/forums/viewtopic. ... 474#p89474). I never saw a reply from you in this thread after the images were posted. So that was since early this yesterday morning.

Yeah, Wolverine is canonically 5' 3" which made Hugh Jackman's 6' 2.5" stature seem very out of place for the character. I can see why they didn't go with someone who's 5' 3" or attempt to make Jackman look shorter, but for those of us who've read the comics it did seem slightly jarring.

Wolverine hasn't appeared in the MCU (yet... Disney did purchase FOX) and considering the overall success of the X-Men films, I think Wolverine definitely gained far more exposure and recognition than he did from comics or the animated series.

(NOTE: Maia and I haven't seen Spider-Man: No Way Home yet and the introduction of the multiverse into the MCU and we've avoided spoilers so far, so please don't say anything that could be construed as a spoiler... such as the X-Men and/or Wolverine making an appearance.)

That said, Wolverine still doesn't have the mass market appeal of Spider-Man (and to some degree, Captain America and the Hulk) or Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. But before the MCU, he was certainly better known to the public than Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, or Nick Fury and the entirety of S.H.I.E.L.D. itself.

Thor is an interesting case because the Marvel version probably wasn't all that well known, but lots of people had heard of the mythological Norse god.

Just wondering: I've seen bits of the Thor film (i.e. the one where he gets transformed into a mortal and can't lift his mighty hammer). IIRC, the only named deities there were Thor, Loki and Odin. I saw the film a year or two ago, so I can't remember much about details - but ... are any other Norse deities named in the film or comic?

I'm thinking more about the more obscure deities like Baldr, Njörður, Tyr, Forseti, Bragi and so on. (If you're not sure who I'm talking about, take a look: the lesser-known gods of Norse mythology)

You insult me by thinking I don't know Norse mythology.

As for the comic, yes.

Baldr (as Baldur) has appeared for a VERY long time in the comics. Almost from the start. As has Heimdall. Tyr also appears. And...

Even though the X-Men movies weren't nearly as successful as the MCU/Disney movies?

Nor have I. I've not seen a movie in the theater since everything started happening with my wife's health condition, ironically, right on time with the pandemic starting.

So I never see any movies until they hit Disney+, HULU, Netflix, etc.
