Speaking of spiders could be costly!

Thanks for posting those algae pictures! In a book by my favourite author (Noorderlicht by Bordewijk) somebody tries to call his daughter Noctiluca. I looked it up in the encyclopedia back then, but nothing beats photos to see what he meant.

(checks all corners of the computer desk for spiders)

I live in Australia and trust me, you don't want to live here - particularly out in the Bush or the Outback, where spiders are plentiful. :P It's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Even here in the city, I'm getting spiders making their webs on my balcony and my car.

So yeah, enough with the spider pics already. :x :P

On the subject, here is a song written and performed many times by the Aussie duo the Scared Weird Little Guys, all about the wonderful wildlife and fabulous fauna that await you in Australia.

And here are the lyrics:

Deadly Animals
(By The Scared Weird Little Guys)

Redback, Funnel-web, blue-ringed octopus
Taipan, tiger snake and a box jellyfish
Stonefish, and the poison thing that lives in a shell
that spikes you when you pick it up!

Come to Australia -
You might accidentally get killed!

Your life's constantly under threat -
Have you been bitten yet?
You've only got three minutes left
Before a massive coronary breakdown!

Redback, Funnel-Web, Blue-ringed octopus
Taipan, tiger snake and a box jellyfish
Big shark just waiting for you to go swimming
At Bondi beach

Come to Australia -
You might accidentally get killed;
Your blood is bound to be spilled;
With fear your pants will be filled -
Because you might accidentally get killed!

And finally, here's the TV Tropes page about Australian wildlife: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/M ... anWildlife

Um, enjoy... (?) :?

Since you don't want spiders, how about the cone snail? It's a snail that shoots a harpoon full of venom and it can do a real damage to us!

Let's not forget our friend, the blue ringed octopus. This thing is the size of a golf ball and can kill 26 humans in within minutes. Here's some info about it.

Oh yeah... these creatures live in Australia. :P

There is no antivenom, and treatment involves providing life support until the venom is metabolised by the victim.
Reassuring...

Just to show that Australia hasn't cornered the market on deadly creatures, here's something called the Brazilian Wandering Spider. It's also been called the "most deadly spider on the planet."

While it usually lives in South America, it's also appeared as far north as England. How? It likes to hang out in banana shipping containers.

It bit a chef in England who poured boiling hot water on it and stuffing it into the microwave. It survived and continued its reign of terror.

O...K... that's why I don't consume National Geographic products. "Be very scared, although this little critter lives on a different continent and is unlikely to survive in your rainy climate, it might just start to live in your bananas and kill you at night! They're after YOU!"

Anyway to prove there are cool spiders:

I'm intrigued by that killer snail. Very Freddy Pharkas!

DPX and I watched a TV show on the 12 deadliest creatures in Australia and couldn't get over how nasty they were. After the show was over we came to 2 conclusions:
1. We never are going to Australia
2. It is miraculous that you and Al are still alive. ;)

True. Particularly since I was bitten by a spider about 5 days ago. *shudder*

Before I start driving, I usually walk around the car and destroy any cobwebs I find. Five days ago, I'd started brushing a cobweb off my car when I suddenly felt a painful sting on the back of my hand. I didn't see it or anything, but I'm assuming that it was a spider, because cobweb + sting = spider! :P

Anyway, the pain went away in a few moments, but for the next few days, I felt very weak and shaky, couldn't sleep too well, sweated a lot (even in cool weather), and felt like I wanted to throw up but didn't have the strength. I also had a headache that lasted and lasted for about 5 days - headache medicine didn't help at all.

The same period coincides with an unprecedented tropical heatwave here in Melbourne, so it's very hot AND very humid. As you can imagine, this didn't help things at all.

I am, however, feeling a little better now. That spider is back living on the underside of my car - this morning, I saw it crawl under there. Hopefully it stays there and won't bite me again.

This whole episode just makes me think - why don't we humans just give up and hand over the planet to the arachnids? :P I'm sure they'll still be around when we're gone. And they're all out to get us. :P (JOKE! JOKE!) ;)

Didn't you go to see a doctor? Maybe he could have given you something to help, if it was indeed a spider bite.

Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines as Andrea. Most spider bites don't need medical attention, but... well, some of the spiders there seem awfully hellish. :P

You need Raid. Lots and lots of Raid. Maybe a flame thrower too. That'll get that spider out from under your car.
