The new PSU arrived, we installed it and now the PC is running flawlessly. And it makes a lot less noise!

(Thank goodness. My sister had an audio CD in there we'd left in because our DVD player didn't respond properly (so a disk had to be in there, it only opens well if there's a disk in it) and we were very afraid we couldn't get it back.)

There should be a small hole that you can stick a pin in that would pop it open, if that happens.

It is good that it was only the PSU that died. It is very likely that it can take the motherboard out when a PSU dies. Do yourself a favor. Get a good surge suppressor. They are a small fraction of the cost of a new PC and a lot easier to replace.

This is something that has become a common problem. I know several people with this problem and I have two machines that suffer from it. I keep a pin designed for the emergency release on hand at all times because of it.

You can also try this....

It works for me. I also keep a paper clip handy, just in case.

Software commands do not work with this problem. The macro that I wrote for the CD detection routine for the installers will open the CD tray if it does not detect the expected CD. It works on my PC if there is a disc in the tray, but fails if there is no disc. The eject on right click also does not work.

All I know is it works for me whether there's a cd in the drive or not. Occasionally I may have to run it twice if there's no cd in the drive. My problem is intermittent though. The first time I had to use the paper clip.

That is the first sign. It may take a while, but if it does progress, only a probe will open it with no disc.

The sound on the rear speaker socket doesn't work.
