It's plenty racist. For example, there's LSL5, where Patti gets a blackface disguise via the exploding copier and uses this to blend in with the black musicians. And the few people of color who do appear in the games are generally reduced to caricatures (e.g. LSL1 has an Asian convenience store clerk who mixes up Ls and Rs, played for laughs).
Anyways, even though the games are massively problematic, that doesn't excuse having those same problems when talking about the games. For example, even if you were talking about a work where black people where constantly referred to with the n word, that still wouldn't make it okay to use that word to refer to the characters there.

The store clerk is actually a caricature of Indian people, and probably the inspiration behind Apu and the Kwiki-Mart from The Simpsons (LSL 1 was done in 1987, while The Simpsons' first season came out in 1989).adeyke wrote:It's plenty racist. You're right. It was dumb of me to generalize and marginalize Shablee like that. It's more accurate to classify her as trans-gendered. have problems with that scene, too (when Larry vomits, it reminds me of Ace Ventura's over-the-top self-purging scene after he discovered Lois Einhorn is a man). Another problem is that Larry may have been violated against his consent by Shablee, but we don't know for she since the scene faded out just as Shablee was moving fast towards Larry while he was hunched over.adeyke wrote:No. Shablee was consistently referred to as "she". She just happened to have a penis. That whole scene was utterly transphobic, but there's no need to carry that over to discussions of it.Lounge Lizard wrote:Women who turned out to be men who may have slept with Larry:

There's a part of Larry 3 that sounded rather racist to me. It referred to the Polynesian islanders of Nontoonyte Island as living in the Stone Age, which reflected lingering Euro-American attitudes towards the rest of the world. It made me think of how the Hmong were unfairly referred to as Stone Age people during the 80s when they migrated to the U.S., based only on a superficial understanding of how the Hmong live (and little knowledge at all of their service with the U.S. during the Vietnam War). At the same time, though, the residents of Nontoonyte Polynesians (even though they're fictional) were portrayed as being practical and smarter than their Euro-American tourists, such as keeping certain natural parts of the island devoid of traffic, allowing quick divorces, handling all the business of their island, and knowing how to program in assembly language.Rath Darkblade wrote:Uhm... Leisure Suit Larry is xenophobic? I agree that it's very sexist, and also slightly homophobic (although Larry never attacks gays physically), but LSL never came across to me as xenophobic or racist... err, at least until LSL7, that is (with the portrayal of the Chinese cook). Even then, the cook was doing a "stereotypical Chinese" voice because that's simply what people expect him to sound like. *shrug*
Anyway, it's not as bad as some of the content from Police Quest or even King's Quest. I rather like the Chinese-Irish cook in LSL7, and kind of wish they showed more of him in the rest of the game.
I feel bad getting into this excursion. Sorry about that.
Back on topic, I might as well include Annette Boning as a woman who Larry had almost or slightly had sex with, in a manner similar to Michelle Milken.
