I read through that AGI vs SCI post you linked and went through the SCI games list to make sure I wasn't including any games in this post that shouldn't be here.

Of the games that I've used your installers for, here are the ones that I'm having problems with in regards to having install.exe or resource.cfg that, as far as I know, should have these two files:

QFG 2 (no installer / yes resource.cfg)

KQ1 SCI (has installer and resource.cfg but doesn't allow configuration of resource.cfg)

KQ4 SCI (no installer / yes resource.cfg)

KQ7 (has installer and resource.cfg but I get this error when trying to run it)

For the ones that simply don't have an install.exe (QFG2 and KQ4 SCI), can I copy an install.exe from another game and place it in their respective directories?

For the other two games (KQ1 SCI and KQ7), can you offer any advice as to why I might be experiencing these issues?

I know that it's probably unnecessary to even have install.exe but to me the collection feels a bit incomplete without them.

I can give help with my installers, but using D-fend Reloaded creates too many unknown variables. My installers assume that you have the original media, not downloads. The original media will be complete. If a file is missing then the installer cannot copy it to the installed directory. All of the files should be on the disks or CDs.

The Sierra installer uses several files to work, an INSTALL.EXE (the name might vary according to game, especially the SCI32 games), INSTALL.SCR, INSTALL.HLP, INSTALL.TXT and possibly a batch file (some of the SCI0 games may have fewer files and is missing a GUI.) The EXE is the actual executable to start the installer program. The SCR is the script for the installer. This is mostly a script for the actual install process, not the configuration utility. The TXT is a list of the messages the installer may use. The HLP file is a list of the drivers and their information. If there are unlisted or missing driver files in the game's directory, the installer will fail, so the installer files may not be usable in another game.

Note that the RESOURCE.CFG can be manually edited, but be careful to use the right drivers or the game might crash or not start.

Ok. Well, I do own all of the games that I'm using with D-Fend Reloaded, but not original media. I own the collections such as from Steam for example. I'll go back through and put each one through your installer once more to make sure that everything is the way it should be - as I understand it your installers should work with these collections to restore the missing files.

So what you're telling me, for example, is that Ultimate KQ4 should have an install.exe if everything is done correctly?

The KQ, PQ, SQ and LSL collections from Steam are essentially the same as the 2006 VU collections. These were highly flawed releases that were ripped as badly as if they were warez releases. You can read about all the issues with the KQ collection here: http://sierrahelp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=86&t=657 All of these collections had similar issues.

The good news is that it has been reported my 2006 VU patches work with the Steam releases, but I have not tested it myself. http://sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updates/N ... aters.html

This will restore any missing files. Once successfully applied you should have a complete copy of KQ4 to use with the Ultimate installer.

If you run into any issues with them ask in each series forum.

Hi Collector -

I'm wondering if this is the DOSBox SVN build that you used with the installers? If not, would you mind telling me which one/version you used so I can check to see if there are any newer releases?

Also, I'm trying to get general midi to work in the games that support it - Does the DOSBox build that you use in your installers (the one with MUNT support built-in) also support general midi? If not, do you know if there are any SVN builds that can do general midi (or both mt-32 and general midi) or what would you recommend?

What I'm trying to do is pre-configure my games to launch with the preferred sound driver so that I don't have to mess with any other 3rd party programs when I want to play a game. In other words, I really like the built-in MUNT support because I don't have to open up MUNT separately. And so I'm trying to figure out a way to achieve the same level of convenience with general midi, if possible.

Which version of ECE is included with your installers?

Also, do your installers incorporate any of the general midi patches by newrisingsun or tikalat as seen here?

Yesterplay's builds were not available when I wrote those installer, so none.

There are a number of the hacked drivers I have used. If you look at that thread I was involved from near the start.

So is the one that is used in your installers a build that you compiled yourself?

I tried out the most recent ECE build with interesting results. The music sounds a little more distorted and "crackly" as compared to the DOSBox build included with your installers. I've included a video for comparison:

https://youtu.be/CdOrXYE_d5g

As the description says, the first version heard is the most recent ECE build whereas the second is the one included with your installers. If you alternate between pressing 2 and 8 it will skip the video between the two versions for better comparison.

Any idea why I'm getting this distortion with the ECE build?

What is in the installers is probably from when sergm used to have DOSBox builds on the Munt SourceForge page. It would be an older version of Munt. Yesterplay's would be using the most recent Munt. Also, you got the build with FLAC support. It was just a quick patch devised by NRS that had problems. The only reason to get it is if you had ripped a CDA track to mount a CUE sheet for disc-less play and did not want to put up with lossy MP3s. Completely irrelevant to SCI0 games.

Not too long ago, I purchased the Collection Series of King's Quest, Space Quest, and Quest for Glory on its original media. I used the Collection Series installers.

After installation, I found that both KQIV SCI and SQI VGA did not have working setup/install files. Here are the errors I get when trying to run them (first one is from KQIV SCI, second one is SQI VGA). I've included screenshots of the folders of each game as they appear after using the installer.

Otherwise, I have working setup/install files for every game. I am aware that I can edit resource.cfg to change settings but I would really like to have a working set of these setup files for each game if possible... Does this involve a simple alteration of these files in some way?

Start new threads in the relevant forums for any specific installers.

Hello again -

Do your installers include any of the patches from this thread?

For example, tikalat posted a patch for KQ7 that fixes some issues with midi, music, and speech. Do your patchers include anything like this or might I still want to apply these manually?

I'm afraid I've put the cart before the horse and have already applied many of the patches that I've found on this thread (after using your installers) -- is it possible I've borked something by doing this?

Some do, especially with the Munt installers here http://sierrahelp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=3925

Would applying the same patches potentially mess something up?
