I think part of that is because we've seen so much polish and refinement in these areas of entertainment over the years. We just understood that things weren't the best back then. In KQ5 we weren't critiquing voice performance, we were just going "holy crap it talks!!" Lol

I experienced the same thing with the old Ghostbusters and TMNT cartoons. Started watching them and I was like "how did I not realize how corny this was?" So I stopped watching because I didn't want to ruin the memories lol. Although, recently I discovered there was a cartoon called Xtreme Ghostbusters with a new younger team led by an older Egon. In the finale of the series there was a 2-parter where the old Ghostbusters came back and even as an adult that was freaking fun to watch. Especially because they brought their old gear back and the Xtreme Ghostbusters had all new gear that looked weird and stupid. Unfortunately, they ditched the old gear eventually and just all used the new stuff.

Man we're nerds. It's a good thing I'm already married! lol

No. Not near as much, anyway. She doesn't game at all. I got her to play Minecraft once upon a time but she can't handle first person games. Makes her sick. Nowadays she just plays Skyrim on the PS3. She likes that game (in first person strangely enough. So I don't get that. She did enjoy Minecraft...). Every now and then I try to get her to play other games like adventures. She's just not into it.

But in the video side of things she's not bad. She loves Star Trek, Stargate, the MCU, and all manner of sci-fi. She's not as into Star Wars strangely enough. But then, neither am I anymore...since...."the incident."

One thing I've always found memorable was the packaging. Those big cardboard boxes with the beautiful painted covers. Then opening them up to see all the manuals and disks stacked neatly within. Digital releases just don't have the same magic.

I agree, Semi-Happy Partygoer. I still have some of those old cardboard boxes - in fact, I think I have the box for Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (but yes, of course it's not a Sierra game but a LucasArts one).

My goodness, was it released in 1992? How time flies...

The first things that sprung to mind were puzzles and stories, but I think that applies to adventure games in general. For me, things that separated Sierra games from companies like LucasArts were:

1) The opening Sierra logo, especially in the early 90's with that epic score and those sparkle animations. That still gets me pumped whenever I hear it.
2) A variety of games, all different tones and genres. Family-oriented fantasy, sarcastic sci-fi, gritty police drama, educational wild west adventure, non-educational wild west parody, supernatural thriller, old timey murder mystery, etc.
3) Lots of sequels, so we can keep arguing over which are better and worse, and then rank them.
4) Lots of auteurs, usually at least one per series, so we gradually get to know the faces behind the games.
5) Lots of tech firsts, so there's always a discussion about the contributions Sierra made to gaming.
