Sorry I couldn't pass up a chance to comment on that! :D

Also there wasn't so much... I dunno, mystery to it. The place didn't feel very real. Like she did such a smash up job with GK1 and GK2 that I think I could go there and feel like I know the place. I can't even remember WHERE GK3 takes place.

Yeah lets not do that again - you're already ill. There's no need to be hitting yourself. I am sure enough people hit on you!

(Grand master of the cheesey lines! That's me!)

Promise? That's a lot to ask. :) There are days I don't remember my own name until I log into the forum.

I am a living version of the movie Momento. :D

Jokes aside, since we seem to disagree about GK3, I want to hear from you a more detailed opinion on the game. I'm really interested...

It's sort of like the whole King's Quest VI thing vs King's Quest VII for you. To me, Gabriel Knight 1 was beyond amazing. How Jane had fit so much detail - so much story - into the game (that if you consider its age) - is beyond amazing. I felt like I could go there and know the area and know the history - just because of the game. Gabriel Knight 1 was a game that had so much character, so much story, so much history - and still was so amazing. It didn't feel "over detailed." It felt alive. Even the small little characters like the mime or the artist in the park. Small simple things somehow made the biggest difference.

Then I played Gabriel Knight 2 - and I was floored. I had played Phantasmagoria and such - but Gabriel Knight 2 was once again amazing. While I prefered GK1, there was no denying between the detail, the backgrounds, the story, and especially the music - that so much love, attention and time went into Gabriel Knight 2.

Then came Gabriel Knight 3. Now make NO mistakes. I actually LOVE Gabriel Knight 3. I really do. By no means do I dislike it or anything. But unlike Gabriel Knight 1 and 2, there didn't seem to be as many characters with that much depth. There were a lot of characters - but they all seemed kind of hollow. Or shallow. They were very one dimensional to me, and that was probably because GK1 (and GK2) really, really spoiled me. We got to see alot of the mysterious areas to the area - but there didn't seem to be as much history... or as much life... as we saw in GK1 and GK2. It became a lot more about Gabriel himself - and everything else seemed to fall to the background. Then there was the models/animation - Gabriel's head and hair looked so huge.

So I think the only problem I really had was that there wasn't much history to the area in the third one. It was all about "here's the symbol for the Knight's templar" etc etc - rather than giving any real history to the land. So I didn't feel pulled into the game. And the characters did little to pull me in.

GK3 is still an amazing game. It's just the two before it excelled beyond it - in every catergory.

I understand your point. I can't say that I agree with it totally, but I understand it.

That's how I see it:

Rennes-le-Chateau was extremely detailed as a set for Gabriel's new adventure, no less than New Orleans or Monaco. Moreover, it was extremely adherent to its real-life appearance: the geography of the area was well represented and carefully depicted, as were the inherent geometries of the valley itself, not to mention the architectonic details of buildings such as St. Magdalene Church. Furthermore, the historic and religious background of the region was lavishly polished: from the Roman domination to the Merovingian Kings during the Middle Age, from the Knights Templar and the Cathars around the '200 to the discovery of Abbot SauniƩre, the history of Southern France, and Rennes in particular, was precisely addressed in the game, with an amount of detail unknown to Dan Brown or to other games (I'm thinking of Broken Sword 1, even if I only played it half-way), whose takes on these subjects - the Templars, mainly - feel shallow and pretty inconsistent, in comparison.

The character were indeed less developed than the ones seen in the first two games, particularly Montreaux, who can't really stand the match with Von Glower or Malia Gedde. Anyway, the treasure hunters were amusing and well rounded-up, in my opinion: some of them lacked the charisma of some of the characters from the previous games, but some of them - Baza and Wilkes, mainly - were believable and very well written.

I have said that The Beast Within story is unbeatable, and I really think it. But Jane Jensen in all the three chapters crafted powerful and magnificent stories, and it's only a matter of tastes in preferring one or another. GK2 has a deep, meaningful story of self-discovery and a plot worthy of the best Bildungsroman ever written, but - nonetheless - GK3 has a thought-provoking plot that deals, with class and elegance, with profound religious and philosophical themes, showing a courage that was ahead of its time.

These are the reasons for which I'm also crazy about the third game...
... Anf, anf: one day, I'll also tell you why I'm crazy with the first one, since I've done this for the latter two :P
