Tim Minchin is a god.

Been checking out these kids (young adults? No idea...) in this "School of Rock" and apparently there's several located throughout the world where they do this...

Tawm, this is for you. What many call the earliest (first album 1968) pioneers of heavy metal. They predate Black Sabbath (first album 1970).

15 second, 38 second and 45 second marks - are all freaking excellent signs of this definitely being the earliest sign of metal.

I'd never heard the band WITHIN TEMPTATION... but watched this video because Amy Lee was also singing in it...

And damn, love this song... may need to check out more.

Within Temptation? They're like the biggest Dutch musical export product, and one of our four great symphonic metal bands along with After Forever, Epica and The Gathering.

(Am going to a concert on June 1st that features the singers of The Gathering and After Forever . I'm really happy for AF's singer Floor Jansen striking it big, she deserves it, she's amazing.)

Very familiar with Epica and Floor Jansen (wasn't she from another band previously?). And I should be more clear, seen the name Within Temptation plenty of times (over on blabbermouth, the site I check for metal/rock news). I'd just never listened to any of their songs until that one Amy Lee sang with them live - and it was a great song (not just because of Amy Lee - it was amazing before Amy Lee came onto the stage). So they definitely caught my interest!

Yes, Floor is currently singing with Nightwish, but her partaking in a TV show got her such popularity that she has now also got a solo career going.

But good for you, always great to discover new bands!

Concert was pretty good bytheway, even if it was a bit more pop than rock in places. Anneke van Giersbergen brought quite some nice music, finishing off with an old The Gathering-hit Strange Machines, and Floor Jansen gave a massive selection from about any point in her career, this is her with My Paragon.

They rock pretty hard. I have a question:

I noticed in the Anneke van Giersbergen clip that one member of the band is playing a violin ... but it's very difficult to hear anything he (she?) plays, because the guitars and drums drown the violin out. Is there a more mellow clip, where we can hear how the violin blends into the rest of the band? I'm not sure how it would sound. I hope it would sound good. But if you can't hear the violin, why is it there? It seems a pity for it to be there, if it can't be heard.

I found it a little difficult to understand what "My Paragon" was about, sorry. *looks up the lyrics* Aha! Got it.

I wanted to see more of Floor Jansen, so I picked something at random, and was blown away. Here:



Floor is mesmerising as Christine, and Henk Poort has a powerful baritone, suitable for the Phantom. They also both have very clear diction, paramount for any song. Bravo!

I had the same issue in the concert hall, barely heard the violin. The original by The Gathering didn't have a violiln, and I found 2 recent versions with the same violinist - on both o them it was barely audible.
But this is another nice little snack.

(side note - I maintain that the Dutch translation of the musical is better than the English original).
(second side note: one of the great things about it was, aside from having half of the Dutch symphonic goddesses on a stage, they're both local, Anneke from Eindhoven and Floor from nearby Goirle. It was especially a treat to hear Floor bringing up her local accent. )

Hmm ... comparing the two clips, it's pretty clear how much Henk's voice has aged, which is a pity. That happens, we all age. But he still has a great stage presence, which not all singers have.

Joke de Kruijf seems to nail that ultimate high note effortlessly. (I'm not sure how high it is, or how difficult to hit it is, sorry; obviously, I'm not a soprano).

Now I wonder what the differences are between the stage show and the original novel are.

I'm not sure how the Dutch translation of the musical is better than the English one ... how is it better? But I wouldn't be surprised if it was. The original novel is in French, so ... (maybe) Dutch is closer to French, so (maybe) the Dutch translation of what Gaston Leroux meant is more precise? Closer to the original meaning? *shrug*

I know! I know! I'm making a lot of assumptions here, and (maybe) making myself look stupid. Sorry!
