I've never actually seen the movie but that shot was in the commercials for it and for some reason that is the stuff I remember instead of important stuff like putting on same colour socks.

Nope.

Another hint, the book the movie is based on was/is extremely popular in Europe. In its originating country it outsold the bible.

European/Foreign films just don't get wide release here in the States, usually. That's why it takes so long for anyone to guess them.

An english language remake of the movie is currently being made with David Fincher directing it as it seems that everything must be remade be it films or tv and often badly.
Leads in the remake: Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig.

Personally, I'm ambivalent about the remake as for one I think that remaking a movie simply because of the language is rather silly. Second, Noomi Rapace owns the role of Lisbeth Salander and practically any effort so quickly is going to pale in comparison.
