I've seen that. Using "ladies and gentlemen" is a classier touch than simply saying "men and women."

What I really like is when you're at a themed restaurant (such as Mexican) and the bathrooms are labeled something such as "niño and niña." There are other examples as well, but I can't think of them at the moment.

How about doors labelled "Signor" and "Signora" in Italian restaurants?

I was at a restaurant once where all they had on the washroom doors was a crab and a lobster. It took me a minute to figure that one out. Thankfully, I picked the right one.

Also, Andrea - yes, you got me with "Signore". I'm afraid my Italian is a little rudimentary. What would the plural of "Signora" and "Signorina" be, then? *smile*

Initially, I didn't get the symbolism either, Rath. However, after Maia explained it to me, it made sense (in an off-beat sort of way).

Basically, the lobster represented a phallic symbol (or at least it did judging by the way it was positioned) which probably meant men. The crab was obviously the only other choice.

Yeah, that was a weird one. Maybe that wasn't how they meant the symbolism, but hey, it worked.

And don't anyone say something about women being crabby.

It is:

Male, Singular = (il) Signore
Male, Plural = (i) Signori

Female, Singura = (la) Signora
Female, Plural = (le) Signore

Signorina is a diminutive for Signora, and its plural is "Signorine", usually used for non-married young women.
