Re: Non-Sierra Installers and Patches

I encountered a problem with the game. I made it to chapter 4 (The Circus of Fools), and when I talk to the NPCs, the text just flashes by and there's no sound. I have no idea if this is an issue with the game itself or if it's because of the installer. It looks like the sort of thing that would happen if it couldn't find a sound data file, with the new chapter corresponding with a disc swap. However, I compared the files in the CDs with the ones in my installation and didn't see any discrepancies. Here's the results of the diagnostic:

Just checked. You do not have any missing files, at least in reference to my CDs, so it is probably not something missed by the installer. This is probably getting into a game issue, but will at least take a bit if a further look. Can you post your saves?

P.S. for future reference, please attach a diagnostic log as a file instead of pasting. It makes it easier for me.

Sorry. I'll remember that in the future.

I've attached the relevant save file, zipped. It's right at the start of the chapter.

It is working right for me. Perhaps a codec issue? K I always install the K-Lite codec package since it covers nearly all of the codecs that you are likely to encounter. They are also balanced to avoid codec conflicts.

I installed it, and now it works. No idea why that was necessary for that chapter but not the previous ones.

In any case, thank you for the help.

Since it was a pack, it is hard to tell which codec it needed. If I knew, I'd include it in the installer.

I'm baffled. I'm having the same issues I'd reported earlier, in chapters 7 and 8. I have no idea what's wrong, and they're happening even with the K-Lite pack installed. It's apparently not the installer's fault, but I don't know what the actual cause is. The problem also doesn't seem to be entirely reliable. I had the problem, and quitting the game and restarting it didn't fix it. However, right now, it seems to be working. That's very frustrating. I'm not sure now if installing the codec pack was actually relevant to it working for chapter 4. It's very easy with glitches to make the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy.

Did you have any other codecs installed before the K-LIte?

I had ffdshow installed. The K-Lite installer removed that before installing. I suspect now that it's a bug in the game rather than any incompatibilities or missing codecs.

I did manage to get through the game now.

The ffdshow codec is infamous in how problematic it can be. It is why the K-Lite installer tries to uninstall it, but if it did, it should not be causing issues.

Installed Sanitarium a few days ago, and thought I'd give it a go inbetween sessions of pannin' fer gold, but it gives me the following error on startup:
To run this application, you first must install one of the following versions of the .NET Framework:
v4.0.30319
Contact your application publisher for instructions about obtaining the appropriate version of the .NET framework.

That would be from the custom EXE I wrote to shut down the Windows Explorer before launching the game. This is required to avoid the color corruption in the game. It will relaunch Explorer after you exit the game. It is built on .NET as are a large number of modern applications.

Is this your dino? Any newer machine should already have the .NET 4 framework installed. Just install the framework and run any security updates for it. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... x?id=17851

I'm otherwise not sure if I should play this game, it's giving me a headache. I'm playing on my Win 7.

That is an error from the game itself. You could play with compatibility settings. If all else fails, try replacing sntrm.exe with the one from the CD.

Anyone want an installer for The Last Express?
