Sorry for the late reply (was on vacation), but no, beating the pirate captain isn't the end of the quest. All he does is give you the key, and maybe his hat. :D

The whole point of the treasure hunt is to help Katie get past the locked door beyond the sea serpent. You'll need all parts of the key detailed in the map to open it, including the Captain's key, the Tattooed skull (Katie finds it if you beat the captain), and the Dead's Man Chest gem (which you need to trigger the pirate captain quest anyway). Then, once you're inside the locked door... that's a post for another day.
Welcome back! I hope you had a good holiday. :) Where did you go?

Hmm, I don't think that I have the Dead Man's Chest gem - at least I'm not too sure. As for the locked door beyond the sea serpent ... hmm, hold on - I think I freed the sea serpent once. Is that what you're getting at?

Also, where do I meet Katie during all this? Would she be down in the tunnels, or in the games room, or ...? I'm confused (again, nothing new there!) ;)

Dubrovnik, Croatia, for a wedding. :)

Here's my full playthrough of this section to my recollection. A lot of it seemed to be buggy or based on trigger events, so I'm not sure how to initiate everything, but this is the order of events from my side. It's a fairly large quest - possibly the biggest in the game - so if something doesn't work, I can't help with that. It might mean Katie doesn't like you. :P

1. When the sea caves first became available (after helping the Qwirk), I spent a couple days exploring all the unobstructed passages. During that time, I found part of a map either in a chest or on a body.

2. In the next few days, Katie met me over dinner to confide in me about her map. I showed her my half. In the following days, her map was stolen and I helped recover it from Sosi's room and gave it back to her.

3. As mid-term approached, I found her in the sea caves by the waterfall. We agreed to look for the treasure together, but I had to find a gem from a "Dead Man's Chest" first. I found this gem on a corpse near the entrance to the Gog-Gate, hidden inside the dead man's rib cage, and returned it to her.

4. For the next part of the treasure hunt, she asked if I wanted to find the Tattooed Skull or the Captain's Key. I picked the Captain's Key and wound up fighting a bunch of gogs, blowing up the Gog-Gate, fighting the zombie crew, and beating the captain at Poobah in order to win both the Key AND his hat.

4b. On my first playthrough, I ran into a bug where I found the Tattooed Skull before talking to Katie and it barred me from completing the quest. But if you pick going after the Skull, Katie will deal with the pirates. The Skull itself is in a booby trapped chest at the bottom of a hole you'll need to climb down in the room just after the serpent.

5. Then I had to track down Katie at the locked door. To get past the serpent, I rope-walked across the chasm, climbed the cliff, took the dried fish from the altars, and fed them to the serpent to distract him. In the next room, I fought some drats and went another room down to find Katie.

5b. Part of a side-quest here is that you can blow up the ceiling above to knock out the serpent, and then use three Big Bombs to blow up the dam and set the serpent free (after full-potioning it back to health, of course). You get a good all-stat-boosting ring for it.

6. When I found Katie at the locked door, I gave her the Key and we solved the door-opening puzzle. Once inside, I wore the Captain's Hat to keep the zombies from attacking me, and then I ordered them to follow me into the next room and help me with the final boss inside.

7. And then we got treasure! As a reward, I picked a Stealetto dagger for my troubles.

Thanks, Datadog! I hope you enjoyed the wedding! :)

I did go through the serpent room once, knocked him out, re-potioned him and got the all-stats-boosting ring. I just couldn't bear doing that again, since I'm so close to being in Katie's good books. ;)

And Tawm ...! We don't want to spoil you! :D

Hooray! Datadog, after trying again three or four times, I finally got through everything that you mentioned and took the Stealetto for my very own. Yay! \o/

Should I try to take anything else? Like the cloak or the other thing from the treasure hoard? :D

Congratz! The only thing I took was the stealetto. Having a magical dagger really helps with fights in the catacombs.

Hmm. On the other hand, my sneak level is 100 - so do I need to fight anyone in the catacombs? ;) And what does the Stealetto do that makes it magical?

And by the way, how can I find the password to where Joel is in the catacombs? He's not there yet, but I've been there, and I can't open the door without the password. :(

The stealetto is good against magical creatures, like the undead. In the catacombs, you can sneak if you have to, but it's good to clear out the rooms so you can loot the monsters and anything else you find.

Every day after class, Joel's next to the classroom. Talk to him every day and he should eventually sell you the password. I'm not sure if there's another way in otherwise.

Hmm. Don't the undead come back, though? I know that the drats/gogs/etc. always come back.

Oh... hmm. Any idea what day he does this? I'm currently on day 26, so I hope I haven't left it too late and have to start over! :(

They come back very slowly. Once you clear out a room, I don't think it ever refills past two enemies. Not from what I saw.

I haven't played it enough to know. But if you're on Day 26, just keep checking with him at his store every day. I showed up, asked him a bunch of questions, and he offered to share the info. I don't know if his approval of you plays a factor.

Hmm. Yay! :D I tried this out, and I wasn't too late. Turns out that day 26 is part of the 3-day, mid-term holiday; so Joel was soon back. I asked him for the password, and he "sold" it to me. (Grumble).

I got into the catacombs fence, who told me where Joel was when he got kidnapped - and I saved Joel from Zac the wraith! Yippee! :D

But by gum, the catacombs fence is expensive. And he charges up to 100 Lyra per question!! Yikes. Is there anyone else who is more reasonable?

Oh, and by the way... my Shawn met his dad's ghost now. Things are starting to make more sense. I left a rose for Patrick's beloved, and helped the ghost kids (by sneaking around the minotaur). I have the Bone Sai dagger, too, plus the special sneak-boots, the black cape and the Underglover (to help with lockpicking). So everything is looking pretty good so far. I also finished the Magic class, which helped a lot - especially with fighting the undead, etc.

The only question remains... what's next? I know that a Drat army will soon be invading, and I'll need to confront the Drat Queen. But how do I find her? In my first attempt, I couldn't even find her. :?

As far as I can tell, you can solve the game without talking to the fence (I could be wrong). I saved before talking, bought all his answers just to read his dialogue, and then loaded my game to get my money back.

Do daily visits to the library after the Drat Queen appears. Eventually, the librarian should remove the spell that's keeping you away from the scary painting. Inside will be a whole other gauntlet of puzzles to solve.

My one big complaint with the game is if you figure out a puzzle solution days in advance, the game sometimes won't let you solve it until you're at the necessary point in the plot. It's like with the Qwirk, where you have to do three nightly stake-outs in a row just to catch it. Getting into the Drat Queen's dungeon is the same thing - just keep coming back until it lets you in.

That sounds reasonable. I was thinking more of the prices for his goods (special hood, special boots etc.) ... I'm sure they're worthwhile, but they're VERY expensive. I noticed that once I saved Joel, his shop started having some of the fence's things, too - at least the boots - at a much lower price. Any idea if Joel eventually sells all those things?

I agree. On my first playthrough, I could see why Shawn had to wait three nights to meet the meep, er, Qwirk, ;) - he's a teenager, after all, and they need their sleep. But yes, on subsequent playthroughs, it becomes irksome...

Huzzah! :D Yep, I finished Hero-U (with my Shawn specialising as a magic-user, which helped a great deal, especially against the undead!) ;)

It is a good game. I might try the science elective next ... have you tried it before? Do you know if it's worth doing? (I assume that it's all about building your own traps and bombs, etc.)

Hurray! Congratulations!

I haven't tried Magic User or Alchemist yet. Might do alchemist next time I play, just to meet with Von Braun. He and the magic teacher almost never appear in the Healing path and I haven't met either of them. I've only ever overheard their conversations so far.
