Well, yep -- that worked (with some minor modifications for the directory for Civ 6). Thank you, DPX and MI. :)

MI ... yes, I understand that it's the game itself (and not the platform client) that's showing updates and ads. Sorry, it was stupid of me to blame Steam for that. Thank you both for correcting me. :)

Now I have to get rid of mods for both Skyrim and Civ 6. I know that the more mods I have, the slower and more unstable a game will be. But does the size of a particular mod also affect this? I mean, if one game has two mods at 500 MB each, and another has 10 mods at 5 MB each ... well, does the mod size make a difference, or is it just how many there are?

Glad to know it worked!

Well, first off... are you experiencing any problems with the mods currently installed? If you're not, you might as well keep them in, especially if you have any saved games that require them. I know Skyrim can get a little weird if you load a saved game that had a recently uninstalled mod in it.

As for the size of a mod, I don't think that really matters in Skyrim or Civ 6. How many mods won't make a difference either unless you have multiple mods that conflict in some way or affect the same files, in which case you could accidentally overwrite one mod with another. You might remember having some mod-related overwriting issues in The Witcher 2.

In general, it's best to get mods from the Steam Workshop or use the Nexus Mod Manager for mods you downloaded from Nexus Mods. Both options allow you to easily install and uninstall mods without having to remember exactly where you put them.

I was (in Skyrim -- see below), but after some experimentation, I found which mod caused the issue and got rid of it.

In Civ6, I'm using (perhaps) a dozen mods? They're not causing any problems, except that starting a new game (or loading a game) was becoming very slow. (As in, I could easily read 4-5 pages in a book while waiting ... and then give up on the game and read the book, instead). ;) I know that's normal for Civ, but still a little irritating, that's all.

Of course, compared to the problems with the world today (Covid being the biggest) ... I'm sure an issue like that is tiny. *blush* I guess that's just the nature of Civ games.

It can, but there's a way around it. Simply load the game, then save it again. Error's gone. :)

Yep, those are the only two tools I use. Then I easily get rid of a new mod if it causes issues. ;)

It turned out that a mod called "Alduin Eater Beater" (which would make the final battle with Alduin much harder) was causing Skyrim to CTD whenever I met an enemy and attacked. *shrug* Weird, I didn't expect that. But after getting rid of it, everything is fine. :)
