I have Vista 64 bit, so it may not be the same for you.
I found state.dat in
C:\Users\Dotty\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Games\Rise of Nations\StateBackup
No clue what that file is for though.

Huzzah! Thanks Dotty!
*waves a little flag*
I went to my equivalent of that directory and found state.dat sitting there. Wouldn't you know it - the file had somehow been marked hidden and read-only. I unticked the hidden and read-only attributes, ran the game again and voila - it works!
Thanks so much for all your help. *hugs*
As an aside, I think I can hazard a guess to what this file is for. I *think* it keeps track of the player's name, games played, achievements etc. That's probably why the game would not start for me - it was trying to write to this file, but a) couldn't find it because it was hidden and b) couldn't write to it because it was read-only. How it got that way, I have no idea - I couldn't even find it before. *shrug*
Oh well. Thanks again!

You're very welcome Rath. I re-installed it just for you.
Now I'm replaying it. Hugs ya back.

Heh. That game's addictive, isn't it?
*plays the "Hallelujah" chorus to celebrate, then switches to the Dance of Joy*
Now we are so happy, we do the dance of joy!
Oh, happy happy joy joy, happy happy joy joy
happy happy joy joy, happy happy joy joy
happy happy joy joy, happy happy joy joy
happy happy joy joy JOY!

Hmmm..... I'm trying to play some of the old LucasArts games on ScummVM. They work, but I'm not getting any sound on "Day of the Tentacle" (no music, no digitised sound, nothing).
I've seen YouTube videos that show this game with both - so, any ideas how I can get sound for DOTT?
Thanks!

Did you check to see if you had all of the data files? Did you make any global changes to your ScummVM audio settings?

Err... I haven't checked, but I'm not sure what all the data files are supposed to be.
I can make a list of the files I have, if that's any help.
As for global changes on ScummVM - no, I haven't made any. Besides, all the games that I have on ScummVM have sound, with the exception of MI1 (original), MI2 (original) and DOTT.

Make sure you have the MONSTER.SOU file in your directory. The only other two necessary files are the TENTACLE.000 and TENTACLE.001 files. Listings of the necessary files can be found in the scummvm.org website, under the documentation link.

Hmm. Well, I have all three files - MONSTER.SOU, TENTACLE.000 and TENTACLE.001. (I also have TENTACLE.002).
I'm not sure why, but all the files are marked hidden and read-only again.
I can easily unhide them and make them read-write if it makes a difference.

OK, I unhid and un-read-only the files (so now they're read-write and not hidden), and I'm getting music and sound FX again. *shrug*
Is there any way to turn on speech? Is there any speech in this game?
Thanks!

If you have the CD version, yes there is speech. If you have the disk version, there is only speech in certain cutscenes. Press F5 when running the game in ScummVM and select Options from the menu. Make sure that Speech is selected.

Did you check the data files list?

Hrrr... I'm pretty sure I have the CD version - I purchased something called the "LucasArts Adventure pack" back in the day (a long, long, long time ago, when I was still in senior high school). It included CDs of Indiana Jones & the Atlantis game, Sam & Max Hit the Road, The Dig, Loom, and DOTT. I don't think I have all of them any more, but I do have the CDs for Indiana Jones, Sam and Max, and DOTT. Anyway, I tried what MI suggested, but ScummVM won't allow me to change anything or select the "Speech" option.
I also checked the data files again, and I have the three data files needed - MONSTER.SOU, TENTACLE.000 and TENTACLE.001.
