FYI, replacing those files in the patches directory caused crashes when playing from a save created before the patch files were replaced. So that workaround doesn't actually work.

Save games can carry bugs with them, even after the game has been fixed. I can't say if that patch causes other problems, but they need to not be present for the clock puzzle.

It just seems like trying to restore pre-patch saves with the patches in place breaks the game in general. One I removed the patches again, the saves worked fine.

Game saves for the SCI games are very version specific. Patching and unpatching essentially changes the version.

So it sounds like at present there's no workaround for the intro quotes bug. You either have to have text mode on or just live without them.
