It's a very, very old D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) story, I believe - by now it's become a classic. Tawm would probably know more.
Here's the wikipedia entry:

Different people have created their own take on it. Here's the Knights of the Dinner Table take on this:

Funny story. Something about it seems very familiar. Richard Aronson worked for Sierra and was the voice of Cedric. Did this somehow find itself in a Sierra game? Just not Gold Rush?

*looks up Richard Aronson*
Oh! He was also lead programmer for Conquests of the Longbow, and a programmer for QfG1. Yes, he was the voice of Cedric, but also did other voices - see here:

I have no idea if the Gazebo story was in ANY Sierra game, but given that Gold Rush has a gazebo, I thought it might have been there.

I will need to think of something.

You see me when I am here
I am your death
I am one of the pitfalls.
So come, and draw near
Take your last breath
And obey the sounds of death's calls.

Ooh! It's a death screen. How exciting.
I don't think it has to be asked, but ... are you something that kills the main character (or at least causes a "Game Over")?

Yes, if you do what's done, it is a definite game over.

Are you in a game with "Quest" in the title?

Is the game set on earth (as opposed to fantasy or sci-fi etc. games)?
