Would that be Wolfenstein?

There's different versions (titles) - so if it's that, but a specific one, ye can say yes - but ask to name the specific one. :)

I'd think it's Wolfenstein: The New Order. In that game the Nazis won WW2 in 1948, and the majority of the game takes place in an alternate 1960.

Sigh. DPX is correct again, of course!

Now if only we could get my wife to say that... :D

I'm thinking of a computer game that takes place in a previous decade where you control a female character who investigates a mystery involving her family.

Would this happen to be Kathy Rain (I had barely started the game... and really should get back to it...)

I see I'm not the only telepath here! 8-)

Yeah, it's Kathy Rain, so it's Tawmis' turn now!

Additionally, the Director's Cut is out on both Steam and GOG, and is an automatic upgrade for owners of the original, so you might want to play that version instead if you haven't gotten very far in the game yet.

 I had barely started it (seems good!) but then started doing more for my Let's Play Sierra Games channel (powering through some games), so it had sat on the side. Will need to see if I have the Director's Cut too, now. :)

I remember a series of console games, where it's your standard fare of driving cars - winning races unlocks other cars. It pretty much preferred "fun" over realism. But it's the second one that I am thinking of, that introduced a specific mode that had nothing to do with actually racing...

(Don't wanna say because that's REALLY going to give it away... but will use it as a potential hint if it is needed)...

(That's going to be super easy, I am sure, if DPX sees this first) I am actually running out of games off the top of my head, that aren't super obvious ("I remember a console game where you control a uh... Earthworm... and uh...")

Earthworm Jim?

I don't know the console games, but I don't have a console. Er ... not Grand Theft Auto, I'm sure?

I'm thinking Gran Turismo 2 for the original Sony PlayStation. That game was all about racing cars, and it had both an arcade mode and a simulation mode.

No, wasn't Grand Theft Auto. You never exit your car in the game I remember...

No, wasn't Gran Turismo 2... In the second game, they introduced a mode called "Crash Mode."

Okay, then my next guess is Burnout 2.

Indeed, Burnout 2 is the answer.
I knew if I mentioned Crash Mode you'd get it. If I remember correctly, you had an extra Burnout: Paradise and gifted it to me on Steam.
So I knew you were familiar with Burnout.

Yeah, I'm definitely familiar with the series, despite never having been particularly good at it. My brother was a lot better.

Anyway... here's the setup: I remember a computer game that was set in the "future" where you managed an entire organization and controlled a squad of soldiers who responded to and fought against alien terrorism.

Is it one of the X-COM games?

Yes, it is. But which one? (cue dramatic music)
