I remember a PC game where I led a team against an enemy force in a foreign land.

Hmm. Is the foreign land in Europe?

Nope. It's based on a conflict that's more recent than any war in Europe.

By the way ... *thinks* Just an idea, and I know WW2-themed games have been done to death, but perhaps a game could be built around the OSS (i.e. American Office of Strategic Services -- the forerunner of the CIA) and their efforts in espionage and counter-espionage during WW2. I don't think the OSS gets enough credit -- I don't know if anyone still remembers them nowadays -- but from what I've read, before WW2, counter-espionage in the USA was rather primitive, so the OSS basically had to start from scratch. What do you think? It would make a welcome change from all the "gung-ho, shoot-'em-up, give-'em-hell-boys" games that litter the WW2-game market. Just thinking aloud...

Okay, what are you talking about?

When I wrote "recent" it was clear that I meant it as in "this conflict occurred more recently, in the REAL WORLD, than WW2."

No, it's not. When I wrote "foreign," I wrote it from a North American perspective.

Hint: This game takes place in a post-WW2 conflict that's NOT in Europe or the Americas, and you're playing as some segment of the US military.

Well... if you spend a few minutes looking up WW2 games beyond the Call of Duty series or Battlefield series, you'll find that there are quite a few games set in that era aren't the "gung-ho, shoot-'em-up, give-'em-hell-boys" games you claim them all to be. Many involve stealth, secret operations, sniping, etc.

I could suggest a few if you want.

No, it doesn't. The conflict portrayed in this game is older than any of the Middle East wars the US has taken part in.

Fair enough. I thought that maybe it could be about the Grenada conflict. *shrug* Not sure if there are any games about that.

I'm sorry; I never claimed that every war game is a "shoot-'em-up". I simply observed that many of them are.

No, sorry, you didn't offend me. I've had a very short temper lately because for the last two weeks I've been experiencing non-stop excruciating pain in my back and neck. Most of it is muscle pain and inflammation, but some of it is nerve pain as well. Add in a few migraines, and I've not been someone you want to be around.

As far as games (some of which are on sale on Steam right now) that I'd suggest are concerned, here's what I'd look into:

Third-Person Stealth:
Death to Spies: Moment of Truth (2009)
Alekhine's Gun (2016)
Velvet Assassin (2009)

NOTE 1: Ignore the original Death to Spies because Moment of Truth improves on it in every way.

NOTE 2: Velvet Assassin uses checkpoint saves. The other two games listed before it allow for manual saves, quicksaves, and autosaves.

Third-Person Stealth/Sniping:
Sniper Elite 3 (2014)
Sniper Elite 4 (2017)

NOTE 1: SE3 and SE4 are both great games, but if I had to choose, I'd definitely pick SE4 over SE3. SE4 is a better game in every way, and you don't need to have played SE3 before SE4 to understand anything. The only reason I even included SE3 (in addition to SE4) is because both of these games let you manually save and quicksave whenever you want. Ignore Sniper Elite v2 as that's the weakest in the series and it only uses checkpoints.

Squad-Based Real-Time Tactics involving Stealth:
Commandos series (yes, all five of them, the first of which was released in 1998 and the last in 2006)
Hidden & Dangerous 2 (2003)
Partisans 1941 (2020)

NOTE 1: Partisans 1941 requires some base and personnel management on your part, whereas the other games aren't concerned with those details.

Naval Warfare involving Stealth:
Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic (2010)
UBOAT (2019)
Crash Drive 1 (2015)
Crash Dive 2 (2021)
Wolfpack (2019)
Cold Waters (2017)

NOTE 1: Many older fans of the Silent Hunter series dislike SH5, despite it being superior to earlier versions. So if you see some negative reviews, it's mostly older fans rejecting anything new (or at least as new as 2010 can be considered in 2022).

NOTE: 2 Silent Hunter 5 is the ONLY SH game where you can move around in your submarine in first-person and roleplay actually being there, as opposed to simply having menu screens. You can even lie down in the Captain's Bunk, not that there's any point to doing it.

NOTE 3: Silent Hunter 5, UBOAT, Wolfpack, and Crash Drive 1 & 2 are all played from the German side only, so if you have any reservations about playing the captain of a submarine in the Kriegsmarine, just be aware that these games don't offer any alternatives.

NOTE 4: UBOAT is very complicated and requires you to manage your entire crew. It can be quite rewarding when you get the hang of it, but it has a massive learning curve.

NOTE 5: Wolfpack can be played single player, but it's really designed for multiplayer so different people can man different positions.

NOTE 6: Crash Dive 1 and 2 are less complex than the others. Many die-hard Sub Sim players don't consider these games simulators at all, and to be fair, they're at best "sim lite" but they're still fun and require you to remain stealthy.

NOTE 7: Cold Waters takes place during the Cold War, not WW2. You can play as the captain of a US submarine or a Soviet submarine, making this game unique among submarine sims. Stealth is required but is much more difficult here as technology is more advanced than in the other WW2-era games.

None of the above. The highly specialized group you're a part of in this game exists in real life and is under the command of a real branch of the United States military, but I can't say more without completely giving away the answer.

Wasn't expecting you to! Narrowing it down to guess is half the fun. But at least there's a road map to use as clues with questions asked!

Was this game exclusively released for Windows OS?

(Meaning ONLY Windows and not released on Windows and XBOX, or Windows and Atari, etc, so this would also include not on DOS, even though that's a PC and may have used Windows 3.11 or something - I am looking where it only says "Microsoft Windows" under PLATFORM)
