It sounds like you have the CD version (I think my version came from the Adventure Pack as well), but just to make sure, the MONSTER.SOU file should be 262,662 KB in size. If you have the correct file size, then it sounds like it might be a scummvm issue. If you haven't already, you could also check the forums there since your experience trying to change the settings sounds unusual. Good luck.

Try moving or renaming your scummvm.ini file. When you start ScummVM again it will create a new INI so ScummVM will use default settings. Re-add the game, bit make no changes to the settings. If you get sound, the problem was with your settings. If not, perhaps something is wrong with your MONSTER.SOU. See if recopying your MONSTER.SOU from your CD.

I re-copied the file, but still nothing happened - I got music, but no sound effects or speech.

I tried this too - I renamed the file to scummvm1.ini, restarted ScummVM and added the game. Again, I got only music and sound effects, but no speech (and no subtitles either, which was a bit strange).
However, I did get (in the DOS-like Scumm VM screen) the following error, which replicated itself:
WARNING: loadVOCFromStream: Invalid Header!
WARNING: startSfxSound failed to load sound!
This error replicated itself over and over about 8 or 9 times. Any idea what I can do to fix it?
Thanks!

It sounds like your monster.sou may be corrupt. try copying it from the CD again.

Sigh... I copied it from the CD again, but again, I'm getting the same error.
Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Try the new DOTT installer. If you still do not have speech, something is wrong with your copy or your ScummVM.

Ah, thanks! *downloads*
Can I run this installer, even though I already have the game installed? Or do I need to uninstall the game first?

I think you need to uninstall the game first.

*uninstalls, re-installs game...* Huzzah! And it works again, this time with speech and all the bells & whistles!
Thanks so much for all your help.
*goes off to play DOTT*
