I don't think these are fantasy. I would consider them to be more along the lines of "mythology", because we have no proof that either King Arthur or Robin Hood ever existed. Of course, many writers have put forward plenty of candidates for the two roles.
Fantasy and mythology, by the way, have plenty in common: heroes and heroic deeds, dreadful monsters, magic and magicians.
I wouldn't be surprised if the modern fantasy genre stems from mythology. Tolkien certainly used Norse and Anglo-Saxon myths to create LOTR; I'm not sure if anyone wrote fantasy (at least, modern fantasy as opposed to medieval folktales and/or ancient mythology) before Tolkien. Any ideas?
