No, the AGIs did not. They supported the PCjr and Tandy 3 voices with noise channel. The Apple variants had better sound, but remember the hardware limitations at the time. Until you could get MIDI hardware on the consumer level, you couldn't have MT-32. Sierra was one of the pioneers in audio for games.

I saw a video a while back showing how you can tell a 3rd party game from the 'real deal' and they mentioned a hole poked through the bottom of the box as an indicator. Does anyone remember that video?
Nice collection, Tawm! XD

It's a legit release. Probably the hardest to find of the SQ1 games. KQ1 had a similar release with their gold box brand.

I have a copy of the SCI remake in the gold box. But then, I have nearly all releases of KQ1. I have the IBM PCjr release, gray and gold AGI, gold and the pastoral scene SCI and all of the KQ collections.

I found the SQ1 box on Mobygames.com. Looks like Atari ST, Apple IIgs and even DOS (Candada) versions used that box. Strange

WOW... I would kick myself if my knee bent far enough. I had SQ1 VGA in that old box and actually thought it was inferior to the fancy red big box. Like all of my childhood Sierra games, that box is LONG gone. Hey, you may even have acquired my old copy!
The only games I still have boxes for are Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max Hit the Road, and Monkey 1. (But I had way more Sierra games than LA, no doubt.)

Might be, that the year started with a nice find. Was looking at Amazon.com around. Found 13 merchants offering Kings Quest IV used, starting at 8 US$. Two of them had very detailed descriptions of the content (something that you barely see at Amazon). And one of these two stated: contains three 3,5" disks and six 5,25" disks. Ordered it. 10 bucks
Let's see, what will be in the mail eventually...

Which version of KQ4 are you getting? The SCI DOS version of KQ4 came on four 3.5" discs. The DOS AGI/Apple IIgs versions came on three 3.5" disks

It was shelved under "DOS"! So my *hope* is, that it will be the AGI version... Though it might happen, that simply one 3,5" and three 5,25" disks are missing simultanously. Or the seller simply counted wrong. Let's see, what I will receive

Hi there!
Funny enough, it seems I just bought yet another KQ IV AGI. Was looking for this release for more than 6 months, and now it seems I bought 2 of them within 1 week... I bought this one here on EBay:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/221174267316
The Requirements Label states it needs 512K of RAM and supports Roland MT-32. Pointing in the direction of a SCI Release. Nevertheless it has only three 3,5" disks, and as far as I can decypher the Disk label, it says Version 2.0 and Interpreter Version 3.002.0086. Which is the AGI release, according to this:
http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Sierra_Game_Versions
The additional 5,25" disks mentioned on the Requirements Label seem to be missing, though.
So I am wondering: Did somebody simply threw together 2 different KQ4 games in one box? Slipcase from the SCI release, Disks from the AGI Release? Or did Sierra do some kind of Mail-in offering, so you could send back the SCI Disks, and would receive the AGI Disks, if your computer was not capable of running the SCI release?
Kind regards,
Markus

It sounds like it is mixed up. I believe that Tawm got a copy with both in one box. Perhaps it is from someone whose machine could not handle the high requirements of SCI, so sent the SCI disks back to Sierra in exchange for AGI replacement disks. Did you look at the contents on the disks?

Not yet! Just bought it yesterday and shipping to Germany will probably take up to 4 weeks. Will keep you posted though, as soon as I receive it.

Received today via Mail this nice item, Police Quest 1. Still one of my most favoured Sierra Games. Seems to be a rather early version, as the Requirements Label looks more like the ones from the grey Kings Quest boxes. Another PQ1 I have has already the more modern grey-blue stripes. Additionally the disks do have a specific Police quest branding, instead of the generic brown ones with a photo of Yosemite's Half-dome.
