Can't get KQ VII to work on Vista!!

Post by nerk2486 »

Hey there. Downloaded the KQ Collection from Steam, all excited to play VII because I used to play it as a child.....but it won't work!

I get the error: "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or X64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."

I'm not a computer savvy person, so looking for help in the other forums and trying to understand all the computer lingo is making my head spin. Is there any way that I can get the game to work on my computer, or did I purchase the whole thing for the one game that won't work??

The answer that you are looking for can be found on the New Sierra Collection DOSBox Updaters page. It will upgrade the KQ7 that shipped with the collection to version 2.00b with DOS interpreter that can be run in DOSBox, like the other games. The patch also fixes all of the things wrong with the collection. If you wish to see all of the problems that the collection has, see this thread.

You may want to move the collection's folder out of the steam folder and out of the Program Files folder, altogether, before running the patch. Move it a place that Vista does not protect, such as "C:\Sierra\King's Quest Collection" to avoid problems while running the patch and while playing the games afterwords. If you have any problems with it, you can ask for help here.
